**Job Summary**

The Academic Coordinator is responsible for the overall coordination and provision of patient academic education, including remedial educational assistance for learning disabilities or supplemental and learning opportunities. This role will collaborate with school districts and patients' home teachers to maintain patient in appropriate academic status based on medical condition. Duties include the development and oversight of patient transition from the hospital to school environment upon discharge. Position will report to Director of Neuropsychology

**Academic Coordinator, Days**
- **Part time; 8am-5pm, days will vary**
- **Bachelor's Degree in Education/ Special Education required. Master's in Education preferred**
- **Texas Teacher Certificate required**
- **BLS (American Heart Association) required**
- **2+ years of teaching disabled children required**

**This position is located at TIRR Memorial Hermann Rehabilitation & Research.**

**MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS**

**Education**:Bachelor's Degree in Education/Special Education required; Master's in Education preferred.

**Experience / Knowledge / Skills**:

- Bilingual preferred
- Two years teaching is preferred or 2 years child care experience required.
- Knowledge in school district Admission Review and Dismissal compliance process and documentation.
- Proficiency in growth and child development - specifically of physical, emotional, and developmental patterns.
- Knowledge of the range of teaching, learning and behavior management strategies and how to implement them effectively.

**PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES**
- Gathers information regarding the educational needs of the patients. Specifically focusing on the patients current educational level and abilities by communicating with the patients family and home school. Works with medical team and school districts in developing and implementing plans for curriculum.
- Ensures that patients receive appropriate educational services by providing age appropriate assignments through HISD or patient's home district curriculum, individual tutoring, and/or enrichment activities. Reinforce lessons determined by school districts that reflect accommodation for individual student differences.
- Facilitates patients re-entry into home school upon discharge. This entails communicating with the home school regarding patients needs, the family regarding educational laws and the patients rights, and by coordinating school re entry visits and education.
- Plans and maintains appropriate instructional/ learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect accommodation and environment. Maintain the overall learning environment to be conducive to learning and reflect accommodation for individual needs of each student.
- Maintains documentation in accordance with departmental and hospital policies and procedures. Keeps informed of and complies with state, city, and school districts' regulations.
- Participates in patient care conferences and multidisciplinary meetings to communicate with staff and to advocate for the educational needs.
- Complete all mandatory education and required training in a timely manner. Demonstrates interest and initiative in professional development.
- Adhere to all hospital and departmental policies, with particular attention to those regarding attendance.
- Build collaborative relationships with staff, peers and managers ensuring understanding of school services, processes and policies.
- Other duties as assigned.
