Among the key duties of the position are the following:

- Provides administrative leadership.
- Oversees staff, handles accounting and budgeting, purchasing, personnel, facilities, and administrative and financial functions.
- Oversees and ensures an inviting and professional atmosphere for students, faculty, staff and other stakeholders.
- Responsible for departmental accounts, grants, faculty research funds, and other financial matters and ensuring spending within budget.
- Assists with administrative aspects of all faculty recruitment, evaluations, reappointments, and promotions.
- Interacts extensively with the University community, students, external agencies, and organizations.
