Position Summary
The Department of Microbiology & Immunology at the Columbia University Irving Medical Center seeks a dynamic Technician B with a background in biological research to join a vibrant research lab that conducts research into malaria. The research technician will play a key role in our investigations into mechanisms of _Plasmodium falciparum_ parasite resistance to antimalarial drugs. The work will involve assessing resistance liabilities for antimalarial compounds in the preclinical stages of discovery or development. Specifically, this will include culturing malaria parasites, performing drug dose-response assays, generating drug-resistant parasites, sequencing target genes, and interpreting whole-genome sequence data. This work is supported by Medicines for Malaria Venture, a Geneva-based not for profit organization that leads the global antimalarial discovery and development pipeline.
**Responsibilities**:
The Department of Microbiology & Immunology at the Columbia University Irving Medical Center seeks a dynamic Technician B with a background in biological research to join a vibrant research lab that conducts research into malaria. The Technician B will play a key role in our investigations into mechanisms of _Plasmodium falciparum_ parasite resistance to antimalarial drugs. The work will involve assessing resistance liabilities for antimalarial compounds in the preclinical stages of discovery or development. Specifically, this will include culturing malaria parasites, performing drug dose-response assays, generating drug-resistant parasites, sequencing target genes, and interpreting whole-genome sequence data. This work is supported by Medicines for Malaria Venture, a Geneva-based not-for-profit organization that leads the global antimalarial discovery and development pipeline.
The Technician will also be involved in projects to genetically map drug resistance traits in parasites through the use of genetic crosses between multidrug-resistant and -sensitive parasites. This project is supported by the National Institutes of Health and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. In this capacity, the technician will be responsible for propagating cross progeny, testing their clonal integrity, conducting drug susceptibility assays with the progeny and parents, and helping assemble genetic maps to positionally locate the resistance-conferring genes. The goals are to define genes that mediate resistance to antimalarial drugs used clinically in Southeast Asia, where parasite resistance is widespread.
Both projects are collaborative studies involving postdoctoral scientists, graduate students, research technicians, and the group leader, Dr. David Fidock, working as a tightly integrated team. The Technician will also assist with general lab management, including exchanging materials with outside collaborators and ensuring equipment is regularly serviced and maintained. The technician will also be responsible for assuring that reagents related to their work are properly stored and cataloged and will help with overall lab management.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Biology, Physics, or a related science or equivalent in education, training, and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Research experience and technical proficiency in biology and/or cell culture research is preferred but not essential.
Other Requirements
- Must have undergraduate university coursework in molecular biology, biochemistry, microbiology, or genetics.
