**Organization Overview**

Congregations Organized for Prophetic Engagement (C.O.P.E.) is a 501(c)3 grassroots,

Faith-Based organization established in 2000 by a core group of Pastors. Based in the Inland Empire, C.O.P.E is a Black led and faith rooted organization that builds the capacity of clergy and community leaders to protect and revitalize the neighborhoods in which they live, work and worship. C.O.P.E. accomplishes this mission through leadership development, proactive grassroots community organizing and civic engagement. We recruit, train, and develop grassroots leaders, youth, and adults in the principles of community organizing to identify and develop systemic solutions to the conditions they

face. As a multi-issue organization, C.O.P.E.’s work addresses:

- Educational inequity through various school reform efforts
- Access to quality health care for vulnerable populations through policy advocacy,
- community education, and special programs
- Housing justice to advocate for systems that prevent housing discrimination
- displacement and ensure access to affordable and secure housing.
- Ending mass incarceration through various justice transformation efforts to end the cycle of mass incarceration that largely impacts Black, Indigenous and poor communities of color.

**Position Summary**

**Essential Duties and Responsibilities**

**Work Area I: Base Building**
- **Base Building through Community Outreach and Engagement**:

- Engage with directly impacted individuals and families to center their voices and experiences in organizing efforts and ensure that organizing activities and initiatives are responsive to their needs.
- Recruit new members through door-to-door outreach, one-on-one meetings, phoning, organizing meetings and activities, and following up with prospective leaders to increase and support involvement and investment among C.O.P.E. leaders.
- Collaborate with community members, organizations, and stakeholders to identify key issues that affect the local criminal (in)justice system and develop strategies for holding decision makers accountable.
- Support leadership development and training of grassroots leaders and members to develop skills needed to engage in the public arena. The organizer must help to create evolving roles for leaders and volunteers.

**Work Area II: Leadership Development, & Political Education**
- Deepen understanding of the focus issues and the political landscape surrounding key policy campaigns at the state and local level to support education and engagement among grassroots constituencies. Community Organizers are expected to dedicate time to researching, reading, and studying to deepen understanding of issues.
- Work with the Director of Organizing and Programs to conduct political educational workshops, trainings, and seminars to raise the consciousness of community members with knowledge and skills to advocate and organize for their rights and organize for long lasting systemic changes in the (in)justice system.
- Build curriculums and/or programs necessary for our base to understand current and historical context related to the issues they’re organizing around

**Work Area III: Organizing Campaigns & Coalition Building**
- Plan and execute grassroots organizing campaigns, including community forums and outreach events, to raise awareness and mobilize support for justice transformation initiatives.
- Build and maintain partnerships with local organizations, advocacy groups, policymakers, and other stakeholders to keep our base and organization informed, amplify collective efforts and leverage resources.
- Advocate for policy changes and long-lasting systemic changes that support those most impacted by the criminal (in)justice system at the local, state, and national levels to address injustices and promote equity and alternatives to incarceration.

**Other Areas of Work**:

- **Media and Communications**: Work closely with the communications team to develop messaging, press releases, and social media content to effectively communicate advocacy goals and campaign updates.
- **Legislative Advocacy**: Monitor legislative developments and report to Civic Engagement Team; Engage in lobbying efforts to influence lawmakers and advance justice transformation legislation that reflects the needs of our base.
- **Evaluation and Reporting**: Work with the Director of Organizing and Programs to evaluate the impact of organizing efforts and campaigns, and prepare regular report backs for internal and external stakeholders.
