The organization supports NYC young people both by leading students in outdoor adventure programming that pushes beyond their traditional school experiences and also by coaching and supporting educators on how to incorporate lessons from these catalytic experiences within the classroom. Ultimately, our diverse and committed staff support NYC young people in unique ways to develop the knowledge and skills to lead with confidence and curiosity, persist in the face of challenges, and live fulfilling lives.

Role Summary:
The Outdoor Adventure Course Director position at NYC Outward Bound Schools involves overseeing the planning, implementation, and evaluation of courses to ensure high-quality, safe inclusive, and empowering educational experiences for all students over the course of a season. The Course Director is responsible for coordinating course logistics, ensuring appropriate staffing for each course/program, ensuring adherence to organizational design principles, maintaining course safety, and instructing students on course. The Course Director provides mentorship and support to instructors, facilitates debriefing and feedback sessions, and contributes to the development of instructional staff. Additionally, the Course Director plays a role in client relationship management by coordinating information with schools and creating plans to meet the students’ needs. This position requires both remote, overnight work on outdoor courses in NY State and urban adventures in NYC as well as work in the NYC Outward Bound Schools’ headquarters office in Long Island City (Queens). This role is a 10-month contract that requires working five-days a week during designated seasonal programs, with a minimum of 190 days scheduled between August and June.

Essential Functions:

- Serve as the site leader for all aspects of individual outdoor adventure programs with NYC Outward Bound Schools that may include community building, ropes courses, team-building programs, community connect, urban explorations, and Crew adventures.
- Lead climbing programs for students in adherence to safety standards and NYC Outward Bound Schools programmatic goals
- Ensure courses are run according to NYC Outward Bound Schools' safety standards and operating policies and procedures
- Support in the development and/or adaptation of curriculum and lesson plans for outdoor adventure programs to meet the needs of students
- In coordination with the Director of Safety, screen students for relevant medical history and accommodations to ensure the safety of students on course
- Coordinate logistics for each individual course, including addressing staffing needs, transportation scheduling, and individual staff assignments as they arise and ensuring appropriate equipment, gear and supplies are available.
- Supervise and monitor student sleeping arrangements on overnight programs
- Support instructional staff on appropriate management of student behavior, including addressing conflict to maintain the focus of the program when necessary
- Manage overall course safety as well individual incidents and emergent situations to ensure a timely and appropriate response for the safety and health of all outdoor adventure participants
- Provide support to the Outdoor Adventure Manager on the student admissions and preparation process as well as the post-course debrief
- Communicate with school point of contact and families, when necessary, when students are on course
- Mentor outdoor instructors, including observing outdoor instructors on course to provide feedback to staff for the development and professional growth of staff
- Design and lead trainings and professional development for outdoor adventure staff
- Facilitate staff activities that support a continuous improvement framework to respond to shifts in strategy and approach in order to support teams’ growth
- Contribute to all required paperwork, data, and case files for outdoor adventure programs to ensure an ability to capture all course incidents, program reports, continuous learnings, and program impact
