**The Assistant Director of Transportation plays a central leadership role in the transportation office, helping to ensure the safe, efficient, and equitable transportation of Portland Public Schools students throughout the year. Under the guidance of the Transportation Director and in close consultation with key stakeholders, the Assistant has primary responsibility for managing the routing of buses and ensuring the efficient placement of students on appropriate transportation. The Assistant also takes the lead in approving, scheduling, and invoicing for field trips, after-school, and weekend trips. The Assistant Director shares responsibility for supporting transportation staff and positively engaging schools, other offices, and families, including by managing dispatch and communications functions for the office. The Assistant acts in place of the Director when that person is unavailable.**

**Responsibilities**:
**Performs daily and long-term routing (summer and school year) projects to assure timely, efficient routes are built for students.**Communicates route and schedule changes with schools.**Builds weekly schedule consisting of field trips, after-school programs, and weekend trips, while maximizing available resources.**Assists with support for driver timeclock and timesheet issues and makes corrections where needed.**Administrator on duty in the afternoons and alternates school breaks with other office staff.**Covers phone and radio communications and responds as required.**Acts on behalf of the Transportation Director in his/her absence.**Assists with data compilation for reporting purposes.**Willingness to serve as an assistant on a school bus when required.**Ability to operate a small van for student transportation and willingness to cover routes when needed.**Assesses and provides assistance in conflict management between staff, schools, students, and parents when required.**Assists parents and school personnel with inquiries.**Other Duties as assigned.**

**Excellent human relations and oral/written communication skills.**Working knowledge of the city of Portland.**

**Education, Training and Experience**:
**Associates Degree or equivalent relevant experience.**2-3 years of experience in a role with significant leadership and management responsibility.**Experience in the transportation industry is preferred but not required.**

**Special Requirements**:
**Maine Department of Education Criminal History Record Check (CHRC) Required
