**OBJECTIVE**:
The person in this position works regular shifts at the Children’s Desk, monitors the room, and provides assistance with circulation, readers’ advisory, reference and other customer service to children and adults, both as individuals and in groups. This position is responsible for providing early literacy storytimes and other children’s and family programming and community engagement both in the library and out in the community. This position may also be assigned areas of collection development and other departmental tasks, such as scheduling, monthly reports and statistics, and coordinating in-room activities.

**RELATIONSHIPS**:
Reports to: Head of Youth Services

Has no regular supervisory duties.

Has regular work contacts with Youth Services Librarians, along with staff from other departments.

**Essential Duties**:
**ESSENTIAL DUTIES**:

- Use a wide variety of resources to provide facilitative, computer, readers’ advisory, and reference assistance to children, parents/caregivers, teachers, and other library users in person and over the telephone.
- Monitor activity in the Children’s Room for general safety, appropriate behavior, and to build relationships to create life-long library users.
- Be familiar with library policies and communicate them effectively to patrons.
- Assist with, plan, and conduct early literacy storytimes and other programs for families and children, birth to eleven, and their teachers and caregivers.
- Assist with summer library program execution.
- Promote early literacy, department materials, services, and programs by developing displays, conducting tours and visits on
- and off-site, participating in community engagement activities, and contributing to the maintenance of social media as assigned.
- May be assigned a collection to select and maintain.
- May be assigned coordination of monthly statistics & reports, departmental schedule, displays, in-room activities & toys, or other on-going tasks.
- Represent the Youth Services Department on committees within Hedberg Public Library and the community upon the request of the Head of Youth Services.
- Foster a collaborative relationship with community organizations, businesses, educational institutions, and agencies in the City of Janesville.
- Maintain positive working relations with staff, the public, and volunteers.
- Perform other special projects and duties as assigned or required during and after regular business hours including providing support as a part of any City response to essential or emergency operations.

**Minimum Position Requirements/Qualifications**:

**Education and Experience**
- Some college education is required. A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is preferred.
- Minimum one (1) year library experience, or several years’ experience in a related field working with children or any equivalent combination of college and work experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to meet the essential duties of the position is required.

**Knowledge of**:

- Library classification system.
- Working knowledge of computers and data processing equipment (i.e., computer software programs such as those in a Microsoft Office environment) is required.
- Working knowledge of electronic resources including the internet and education or library related sites.

**Skill in**:

- Public speaking and effective interpersonal communication.
- Handling detail-oriented work.
- Customer service best practices.

**Ability to**:

- Relate to children (birth to eleven), their parents, caregivers, teachers, and the general public.
