Job Summary:
Under the direct supervision of a Pavement Design Section Team Leader, this position acts as a technical specialist performing a variety of journey level engineering duties related to pavement design. Typical assignments and duties include field reviews, data collection, design development, materials sampling, any pertinent pavement engineering design, past history collections, analysis of available data and making appropriate design recommendations. Additional duties include creating, reviewing and commenting on specifications and construction plans and techniques.

This position will provide the pavement design summaries and materials design reports for assigned projects. Will review and provide comments on material designs submitted by other agencies or consultants. Investigate reports on materials related problems or feasibility of instituting new procedures. Will write/review contract documents for conformance to materials designs for the respective projects assigned.

**_This position may be available for remote work within Arizona (2 days per week in the office/hoteling)._**

Job Duties:
Write pavement design summaries and materials design reports for pavement construction or rehabilitation projects; this includes writing specifications for subgrade or paving materials, unique to the project's materials design requirements.

Check materials design documents, construction project plans, and specifications prepared by consultants and/or other governmental agencies; verify accuracy and methodology of pavement design calculations and analysis to meet acceptable design standards and practices.

Attend project development coordination meetings and design review/comment resolutions meetings within ADOT and other agencies. Provide pavement design related information and detailed technical assistance to others involved in project development or construction.

Calculate required pavement structural sections, overlays, and supporting materials engineering design parameters; calculate roadway materials construction bid quantities and preliminary cost estimates to accompany design reports.

Research and analyze historical engineering design information (as-built plans, pavement management system data, and maintenance histories of roadways) for pavement designs, calculate pavement structural sections for overlay thicknesses, analyze field notes and observations to formulate various pavement design alternatives.

Review Route segments being considered for future rehabilitation/reconstruction projects; quantify physical roadway engineering features and deficiencies, and evaluate probable causes of pavement distress or failures. Conduct field visits or core measurements for this purpose.

Represent Pavement Design Group at Project site reviews, partnering workshops, pre-construction conferences, and issue resolution meetings in order to provide technical assistance on materials related issues.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):
**Knowledge**:

- Knowledge and thorough understanding of the design and use of rubberized pavements through the state and the Quite Pavement Program in the Phoenix Metro area.
- Knowledge and understanding of the design and use of Concrete Pavements, Rubberized Concrete, and thin white topping concrete.
- Knowledge and understanding of the ADOT Pavement Design Manual, Pavement Rehabilitation Risk Analysis, AASHTO Design Methodology, SODA rehabilitation methodology, Mechanistic-Empirical Design Guide Methods.
- Knowledge of agency policies and procedures, design and construction standards, standard specifications and organizational requirements.

**Skill**:

- Superior analytical skills in order to evaluate and analyze a wide variety of complex materials engineering data and reports.
- Effective oral and written communication skills to accurately convey ideas and instructions to others within ADOT, as well as those outside of the Department such as FHWA, Local Governments, Contractors, Consultants, University Accademia.
- Good organizational Skills.
