Los Angeles, United States Otis College of Art and Design Full time

We are searching for an experienced Writing Lab and Workshop Specialist at our Goldsmith Campus - Westchester campus.

**Primary Duties and Responsibilities**:
The Student Learning Center (SLC) Writing Lab and Workshop Specialist works under the supervision of the Director of the Student Learning Center. This position is primarily responsible for developing the writing labs curriculum—supplementary small-group workshops that support Otis’s first-year writing curriculum—and facilitating the labs for enrolled students. Otis College, on average, offers 8 labs in the fall semester and 2-5 labs in the spring (approximately 200 students a year). In addition, this position will develop campus-wide student workshops. Part-time hours are 14-25 per week and may include evening and/or weekend hours as needed. This position works during the fall and spring term. Hours over the summer term are offered when the budget allows and based on the needs of the SLC. This is primarily an on-campus position, though there may be occasional opportunities for hybrid work.

**CORE DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- Develops the Writing Lab curriculum under the direction of the Director of the Student Learning Center. Facilitates the Writing Labs, serving as one of the primary instructors. The person filling this role must be available to staff writing labs each semester based on course scheduling and/or the needs of the SLC.
- Coordinates with additional Student Learning Center staff supporting the Writing Labs.
- Meets 1:1 with students during and outside the lab as needed, especially supporting students with additional accommodations that may require additional time.
- Creates lesson plans and prepares instructional materials for lab, including handouts, digital resources, worksheets, and learning activities.
- Evaluates and assesses the quality of student work in the Writing Lab and provides feedback to students.
- Builds and maintains the Writing Lab courses within the Learning Management System (LMS).
- Provides regular updates to faculty and the Director of the Student Learning Center on the progress of students in the lab, especially if any concerns or challenges should arise. Includes reporting on attendance and academic performance.
- Demonstrates expertise in supporting ESL/ELL students.
- Reviews and stays up-to-date with academic standards and curriculum of the Liberal Arts and Sciences Department (LAS) to ensure Writing Labs are in sync with courses.
- Assists with the administrative operation of the Writing Labs as needed, which can include sending official notifications to students regarding course progress.
- Develops and leads workshops to support students in the development of study, organization, time management, conversation, reading, and writing skills, primarily in the spring term. Workshops serve as another service provided by the Student Learning Center to support students in academic success and, as such, will change over time to meet students' academic success needs. Workshops may also align with areas of expertise specific to the person in this role as relevant.
- Develops and provides specialized workshops to support students enrolled in the required senior-level Capstone course during the fall term.
- Provides expert information and guidance as part of tutor preparation and training as needed.
- Helps the Director with the gathering, interpretation, and reporting of Student Learning Center operational assessment data from the Writing Labs and Workshops.
- Answers students' general informational questions.
- Attends relevant meetings as directed by the Director.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Cross-trained to support other Student Learning Center services/programs as needed, such as tutoring and/or success coaching.
