Job Description:

APP-Pediatric ER (Pediatric Emergency Medicine)

This Advanced Practice Provider (APP) will join our Pediatric Emergency Department team, consisting of APPs, Pediatric Emergency Medicine Physicians, Pediatricians, Nursing, and other interdisciplinary staff working in concert with all hospital departments. The Emergency Department serves children with acute or chronic illnesses or injuries. The Emergency Department team emphasizes the delivery of expert clinical care, participation in academic research, and sharing educational opportunities. Our team supports both Primary Children's Hospital campuses, located in Salt Lake City and Lehi, Utah.

The APP will typically be scheduled to work two 9-hour shifts weekly in a random, rotating schedule covering dayshift (8am - 5pm), mid-shift (3pm - midnight), nightshift (5pm - 2am), and overnight shifts (midnight to 8am). Additional 2 hours per week paid for documentation and project time. The APP will work shifts in both Lehi and Salt Lake City.

Job Essentials
  • This position is accountable for the provision of patient care and other duties as permitted by licensure and defined within Credentialing and Privileging documentation (hospital), Credentialing and Scope of Practice (Medical Group), Consultation and Referral Plan (NP), Delegation of Services Agreement (PA) (DOPL) or other similar documentation as appropriate.
  • Communication and effective multitasking are needed for the fast-paced work environment. APPs are an integral part of the ED team, additional work with the trauma team in evaluating and treating trauma patients is expected.
  • Full time service includes clinical shifts each week with included responsibility to documentation, quality improvement project, research, & education.
Clinical Practice:

Perform care of patients admitted to the Emergency Department (ED) and Rapid Treatment Unit (RTU) based on a comprehensive systematic approach, current problem list, considering differential diagnoses, and diagnostic evaluation results to achieve optimal therapeutic evaluation resulting in the best clinical outcomes for the patient.
  • Obtain a comprehensive history.
  • Perform a detailed physical exam.
  • Order diagnostic evaluation including lab or imaging tests and obtain necessary specialty consultation to gather information needed ensuring complete care of patient.
  • Based on assessment and evaluation, diagnose patient needs.
  • Use of appropriate prescriptive practice.
  • Initiates protocols/clinical pathways, evaluates the plan of care, ensuring timely intervention.
  • Present patients to the Attending to collaborate regarding plan of care, admission, discharge and transfer decisions.
  • Communicates plan of care with consulting services and providers, the primary care provider, the referring provider, specialties, nursing staff, and all other ancillary staff as indicated.
  • Communicates plan of care with the patients and family members by providing instructions related to the plan of care, disease process, necessary treatment, and medication regimens.
  • Counsels and educates patients and family members in health maintenance, and health promotion activities. Provides primary, secondary, and tertiary preventive care services as indicated.
  • Initiates appropriate referrals and specialty consultations or transfers.
  • Provides specialty consultation by participating in referral phone call acceptance and creation of specialty care plans.
  • Documents a timely, complete, and accurate record of the patient's clinical information and medical symptoms.
  • Coordinates care for patients needing emergency procedures including moderate procedural sedation, recovery monitoring, and discharge process.
  • Advocates for patients. Ensure patient/family participation in care by providing them access to education needs regarding diagnosis, treatment options, and understanding of patient rights.
  • Perform diagnostic and/or therapeutic procedures as defined by Scope of Practice, and hospital credentials and privileges.
  • Facilitates patient flow to ensure timely discharge.
  • Utilize advanced specialty knowledge to ensure that the care provided is appropriate, effective, timely, and cost efficient.
  • Code and bill accurately per established protocol and procedure. Ensure that records are detailed and complete and comply with related standards and regulations.
Education:
  • Conduct and/or coordinate education to increase the knowledge of patient, caregivers, and staff. Provide instruction based on patient needs to support the continuum of care.
  • Train other staff in areas of clinical expertise. Provides teaching of students as appropriate to increase their clinical knowledge and ensure safe patient care.
  • An active, education mind-set keeping current on healthcare practices within the specialty is required. Participate in continuing medical education to ensure optimal clinical knowledge, effective patient care skill, and current licensure with certification is required.
Research:
  • May participate in research and utilizes evidence-based practice to promote quality patient care, protocol development, care process model development, and best practice standards for assigned patient population.
  • Supports professional development through research processes.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Current state license as an Advance Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) or Physician Assistant (PA).
  • National Board Certification as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant.
  • Eligible for State Controlled Substance License II through V.
  • Eligible for Federal DEA Certificate II through V.
  • BLS Certification for Healthcare Providers.
  • Applicable experience as defined by position.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts including holidays, weekends, and nights is required.
