At Starbucks, our mission is to inspire and nurture the human spirit – one person, one cup, and one neighborhood at a time. Starbucks Technologists work to achieve this mission through the use of cutting-edge technology delivered to our partners, customers, stores, roasters, and global communities.
Join our Menu Engineering team as a Lead Software Engineer, where you'll play a central role in developing and operating one of the world's largest digital menu board implementations. This position is not just about leading our groundbreaking solution's technical design and delivery; it's about guiding and inspiring a team of skilled engineers and acting as a pivotal technical liaison. Your expertise and vision will be instrumental in shaping a global-scale project, connecting with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders, and setting new standards in the digital menu space.
Our engineering team is responsible for the end-to-end delivery of our technical solutions; from initial design to running the solution in production. An average day will be a mix of implementing features and functionality, contributing to solution design, providing operational support for existing solutions, and defining or enhancing our engineering standards and practices.
As an engineering lead, you will...
- Innovate and Implement: Design and develop software solutions that are maintainable, scalable, and reliable, ensuring the highest standards of quality.
- Lead Technical Initiatives: Own the technical implementation and delivery of our menu data platform solution, driving its success and evolution.
Be the Expert: Serve as the subject matter expert for menu data, guiding both internal and external technology teams with your deep knowledge and insights. - Champion Best Practices: Promote and enforce adherence to software engineering best practices within the team, fostering a culture of excellence.
- Communicate Complex Ideas: Translate highly complex ideas and concepts to technical peers and non-technical business partners, ensuring clarity and understanding.
- Foster Collaboration: Establish and maintain cross-functional, collaborative relationships with business and technology partners to drive collective success.
- Ensure Stability and Security: Guarantee that application and infrastructure solutions are stable, secure, and compliant with Starbucks’ standards and practices.
- Provide Operational Support: Deliver high-availability operational support and automate solutions across the environment to ensure seamless operations.
- Implement Telemetry and Monitoring: Integrate deep telemetry capabilities to provide ongoing success and performance metrics and ensure service monitoring across all platforms for continuous availability and operational continuity.
Basic Qualifications Education (minimum education level, degree or certification necessary):
- Extensive Industry Experience: 10+ years of professional software development
experience. - Leadership Experience: 2+ years as a technical lead for a group of software engineers.
- Educational Background: Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field or equivalent professional experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Extensive Programming Experience: 7+ years of professional experience with an object-oriented programming language such as C#, Java, or Python (we use C#).
- Large-Scale Systems Expertise: 5+ years of professional experience with large-scale
distributed systems and client-server architectures. - Containerization Skills: Proven experience creating containerized applications or migrating existing ones to containers.
- Web API Development: Proficiency in building Web APIs with high availability and
scalability. - Event-Driven Systems Design: Expertise in designing event-driven systems.
- Data Management: Experience working with both structured and unstructured datastores (we use a combination of Postgres and MongoDB).
- Cloud Proficiency: Demonstrated experience in developing, deploying, and maintaining solutions on a public cloud platform such as AWS, Azure, or GCP (we use Azure).
- Infrastructure as Code: Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code solutions such as Terraform and Azure Resource Management (ARM) templates.
- CI/CD Automation: Experience working with CI/CD platforms to automate the build, test, and deployment of code and infrastructure (we use Azure DevOps).
- DevOps Expertise: Background in a DevOps team responsible for software development, testing, monitoring, and incident response.
- Debugging and Optimization: Proven ability to debug and optimize code and automate routine tasks.
- Engineering Culture Leadership: History of evolving team standards to improve
engineering culture as technology best practices evolve. - 24x7 Production Maintenance: Experience running and maintaining a 24x7 production environment, ensuring reliability and responsiveness.
The actual base pay offered to the successful candidate will be based on multiple factors, including but not limited to job-related knowledge/skills, experience, geographical location, and internal equity. At Starbucks, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at the high end of the range for their role, and compensation decisions are dependent upon the facts and circumstances of each position and candidate.
