Position OverviewThe Student Community Action Corps Program facilitates the engagement of KU students with various community organizations, programs, or support in community-engaged efforts. Student employees will support their partner organization and/or program with various tasks and projects while receiving monthly training and support from Center for Service Learning staff.

ThrYve (Together Helping Reduce Youth Violence for Equity) is a community-based youth violence prevention program. ThrYve serves youth (ages 13-20), primarily racial and ethnic minorities, in Kansas City, Kansas. ThrYve engages youth, families, and community members to provide a collaborative network of youth opportunities, including programs, training, and outreach efforts. ThrYve aims to support and empower youth to positively develop in a safe community through improving youth outcomes and promoting more equitable conditions.

ThrYve youth development facilitators are responsible for fostering a positive, safe, and caring program atmosphere that centers youth belonging and connection to peers, family, school, and community. The youth development facilitator provides direct and indirect services. Direct services include assisting staff in facilitating youth after-school violence prevention curricula, leadership and mentoring programming, and Youth Advisory Board meetings. Indirect services include assisting staff in curriculum adaptations, execution of ThrYve action plans, recruitment, weekly team meetings, and community engagement activities.

Please note, you are eligible to apply for the CSL's Community Service Capacity Awards once a semester, for up to $300, to help offset these transportation costs.

If you are an honors student, this position is also eligible for an honors opportunity award

Job Description
  • Event and programming support, planning, and coordination (60%)
    • Assist and support weekly facilitation of after-school programming with ThrYve and related partners (e.g., school) to serve youth.
    • Support youth in developing mentoring and leadership skills.
    • Support and participate with the ThrYve/LEAD UP student organization.
    • Assist and support with the facilitation of the Youth Advisory Board and Systems Advisory Board activities.
    • Support and coordinate action plans for ThrYve change levers (programs, policies, and practices).
    • Assist with youth curriculum adaptations.
    ThrYve program promotion and development (35%)
    • Attend team meetings, trainings, and professional development activities.
    • Promote ThrYve through participation in community service activities.
    • Provide timely program updates and information to ThrYve participants, community partners, and caregivers/families.
    • Participate in ongoing recruitment activities and events to encourage new ThrYve participants.
    • Generate and maintain program-related documentation (reports, files, data, Community Check Box, etc.).
  • Other tasks as identified by program and site staff (5%)
Required Qualifications
  1. Student employees must be Federal Work Study-eligible.
  2. Excellent and accurate typing skills, excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to complete projects independently with attention to detail.
  3. Basic experience with general office work and use of Microsoft Office programs (e.g., Excel).
  4. Attention to detail and ability to review and input data with accuracy.
  5. Adaptability and flexibility to new tasks, settings, and opportunities.
  6. Ability to take initiative and work both as a team and independently based on the task.
  7. During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: 1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or 2) be pre-enrolled in upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or 3) be enrolled in summer session or 4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments)
Travel Requirements:

This position is based jointly in Lawrence, Kansas and Kansas City, Kansas. A reliable source of transportation for weekly travel to various partner/community sites is required.

  1. Interest and passion for community service, civic engagement, advocacy, etc.Responsibility and personal accountability for completing tasks; time management and organizational skills; attention to details and deadlines.Commit to working through the academic year (9 months).Experience and/or comfort in serving underserved populations.Ability to read, write, and/or speak Spanish.Curriculum development, lesson planning, classroom management, and/or teaching skills or experience in home, classroom, and/or community settings.Effective communication and interpersonal skills.Adaptability and ability to adjust quickly to change in dynamic working environments.Experience with ThrYve as a participant or volunteer.Commitment to ThrYve's mission and to fostering a positive, safe, and caring environment.
