Big Star has an IMMEDIATE OPENING for an Experienced Tractor Trailer Mechanic.

For a resume to be considered, it must represent and/or convey an accurate knowledge AND/OR 1 year of work experience in the following areas:

Trailer Air Brake System (ABS), Suspension, Electrical Wiring System, Maintain Annual DOT Truck and Trailer Inspections, Mount & Dismount Tires, Performing PMs

Additionally, this person will need to be able to train on basic computer use and job specific software and be able to complete daily work orders on laptop, order and pick up parts for repairs, keep DOT Annual Inspection records, and track PMs. They must be able to work closely with drivers, dispatch, and driver managers to communicate equipment issues and repair timelines.

Applicant would be able to prioritize repairs and job tasks, as well as be able to work independently and in a variety of weather conditions.

Applicant must supply own hand and power tools

Shop tools and equipment are supplied

*General Summary*

The Mechanic position is responsible to trouble shoot, repair and perform preventative maintenance on all types of vehicles/equipment within the company’s fleet. Repairs shall be made in a safe, cost effective and time efficient manner. The Mechanic must have practical knowledge of all types of machinery and tools. The Mechanic must have solid judgment and a good understanding of the possible consequences of the work they perform. The company recommends that all employees display an ongoing effort to familiarize themselves with the duties and responsibilities of those positions that have direct or indirect involvement with his or her own.

*Responsibilities *

1. Comply with established company safety and operating rules, procedures, and guidelines; and be responsible for reporting un-safe practices to your supervisor.

2. Maintain a clean and safe working environment to protect oneself and others in accordance with all department guidelines and all applicable company safety rules.

3. Must be able to operate all types of vehicles, equipment and tools.

4. Must be able to perform minor and major repairs on all types of equipment, including but not limited to, all vehicles, trailers, power operated equipment as well as hand tools.

5. Will be responsible for maintaining accurate computer records of time and parts used on specific work order tasks.

6. Assist in developing transportation maintenance and repair procedures.

7. Perform all other duties as apparent or assigned by supervisor.

8. Any other duties deemed necessary by the Lead Mechanic, Maintenance Foreman and/or Maintenance Director.

*Supervision/Direction of Others*

Works with the department staff and co-workers on vehicle/ equipment repairs and maintenance issues. Works with individual vehicle/equipment operators to understand and solve complaints and concerns in regards to proper vehicle/equipment maintenance and operation.

*Key Competencies *

1. Must have thorough knowledge and experience with but not limited to: hydraulic systems, gas engines, diesel engines, electrical systems, drive trains and various hand tools.

2. Must have basic typing and writing skills.

3. Must be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide.

*Working Conditions *

1. Regular and punctual attendance is an essential function of this position. Variations to the work schedule need to receive the supervisor’s approval.

2. Must travel to any location to do work in varying weather conditions, and be able to work outside or inside.

3. Must be available to work before or after regularly scheduled work hours.

4. Must be agreeable to working other than regular hours on a fixed or rotating basis.

5. Employee may also be required to handle and perform work safely and efficiently through stressful situations.

*Physical Demands*

1. Lifting/carrying:

a) On a frequent basis the employee is using a variety of hand tools throughout the day to perform his/her lead mechanic duties.

b) On a frequent basis the employee may be required to lift equipment / parts. The majority of the parts and equipment mechanics handle are less than 50 lbs.

c) On an occasional basis the employee is required to lift a tire/rim or part that may be in excess of 100 lbs. The employee should seek help or use mechanical means to perform these types of lifts safely.

*Mechanic Position Job Requirements*

· Perform and/or assist in the performance of general mechanical duties

· Gain experience by working on the following items with some supervision: engine diagnostics, fuel systems, electrical systems, brakes, air systems, chassis, and general maintenance

· Perform troubleshooting techniques to include the use of diagnostic software

· Maintain a neat and orderly working area and proper handling of company tools and equipment

· Communicate well with Lead Mechanic, Shop Foreman and Manager to plan and schedule needed repairs

· Follow safe work practices and procedures

· Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor

· Must have own hand tools and be willing to purchase tools as needed to perform job function

· Maintain a good attendance record with minimal tardiness or absences

*Knowledge and Skills*

· Working knowledge of semi-truck and trailer operating systems required

· Prefer knowledge in the use of Cummins Insite and Eaton Service Ranger to diagnose fault codes and follow the instructions for the troubleshooting steps

· Understanding of ABS systems

· Ability to read and understand schematics

· Ability to identify specific parts and locate part numbers

*Job Functions*

· Inspect, diagnose, and repair all systems of a semi-truck/trailer combo

· General maintenance to include PM service work (Change fluids, filters, grease)

· Mount and dismount tires and repair flat tires

· Wash trucks as needed to be able to inspect undercarriage

Job Type: Full-time
