Chicago IL United States Shedd Aquarium Full time
John G. Shedd Aquarium

Every year, the John G. Shedd Aquarium welcomes 2 million guests for unforgettable encounters with aquatic life. Moreover, with partners in Chicago and around the globe, Shedd is pioneering advancements in aquatic animal welfare with an emphasis on preventative care and treatment, protecting endangered species and their habitats, and rescuing and rehabilitating wildlife in need.

Only a few aquariums have full-scale animal hospitals, and Shedd s animal healthcare center is one of the largest in the country. The new state-of-the-art Animal Hospital and Aquatic Lab combines clinical care, water chemistry, and conservation science at the heart of the aquarium. What were once separate spaces across Shedd are now connected, collaborative hubs, allowing scientists, the animal health team, and field researchers to expand capacity and better amplify the impacts of their critical work. The Animal Hospital serves as a teaching hospital, providing critical training for zoological veterinarians and veterinary technicians throughout the field. On-site clinical pathology and microbiology labs allow animal health staff to quickly and efficiently run tests that provide information to make well-informed clinical choices. The Animal Hospital and Aquatic Lab includes the Daniel P. Haerther Center for Conservation & Research, where research biologists and conservation scientists study a broad range of both freshwater and marine species.

The new Animal Hospital and Aquatic Lab was among the first completed projects in Shedd s bold strategic vision: the Centennial Commitment , which represents a $500 million investment in programs, partnerships and capital projects ahead of the aquarium s 100th anniversary in 2030.

Shedd s VP of Animal Health, Dr. Karisa Tang, leads a team of talented, best-in-class animal health professionals that manage care for 32,000 animals at the aquarium, from mammals to fishes. At all levels, the Animal Health team is engaged in pioneering veterinary care, ensures the highest standards of animal care, and actively collaborates across the organization and with Shedd s partners to advance conservation science and preventative care. The team also plays a critical role in the implementation of Shedd s Centennial Commitment, as the whole animal care division does, by ensuring the safety and care to the animals throughout the renovation and modernizing of the historic aquarium galleries.

About the City
Chicago is the rare combination of a big city with Midwest sensibilities. The city s 234 square miles sprawl across the picturesque Southwest coast of Lake Michigan, the fifth largest body of freshwater in the world, and comprise 77 distinct community areas each with their own unique heritage and identity. America s third most populous city, Chicago s 2.7 million residents represent a broad range of ancestries, nationalities, and cultures. Recently named Second Best City in the U.S. , Chicago is truly a place where you can find whatever you re looking for, imbued with the friendly charm and community-oriented values unique to the Midwest. The city boasts nine professional sports teams, 22 Michelin-rated restaurants, a world-class arts and cultural scene, festivals, beaches and parks, top-ranked colleges and universities, and a rich, nearly two centuries-old history. The CTA s robust network of bus and train routes combined with an easily navigable highway and street system keeps the average commute time to about 30 minutes, and close proximity to two major airports makes national and international travel a breeze. Further, Chicago has maintained its housing affordability better than any other major U.S. city over the past five decades. Residents enjoy all four seasons of weather with year-round activities, including a range of outdoor activities in the nearby 70,000-acre Forest Preserves of Cook County .

Scope and Responsibilities
The Senior Veterinarian plays a vital role in achieving the Shedd Aquarium s impeccable standards of animal care. This position is given the extraordinary opportunity to shape and implement a comprehensive medical program for Shedd s resident animals, manage clinical medical cases, support a medical records system, and provide reports on the health of the animals. The Animal Health team is composed of exceptionally competent, dedicated, friendly, and relentlessly optimistic individuals. The culture of Shedd is highly collaborative, supportive, and centered on progressive values driven by science and prioritization of animal care.
