Overview/Summary of Role
The Registered Nurse manages a designated group of employees on a nursing unit and assures smooth operations of the unit for a designated shift.
Essential Functions, Duties and Responsibilities
The essential duties and responsibilities described below are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the basic functions of the position. Major Responsibilities
Administrative
1. Accepts and gives shift report.
2. Makes rounds to evaluate status of residents and determine resource needs.
3. Inspects environment, identifies environmental problems, and initiates requests for correction of environmental problems.
4. Plans and Delegate skilled nursing tasks and care plans in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act.
5. Checks for appropriate amount and condition of equipment and supplies; orders supplies and equipment as necessary.
6. Consults with unit nurse manager, assistant director of nursing or shift supervisor to obtain necessary human and material resources.
7. Identifies clinical and operational problems.
8. Obtains assistance for emergencies and assists as necessary.
9. Communicates unit problems and needs to unit nurse manager, assistant director of nursing or shift supervisor.
10. Advises unit nurse manager, assistant director of nursing or shift supervisor of topics of discussion at staff meetings.
11. Gives feedback regarding employees’ performance to unit nurse manager, assistant director of nursing or shift supervisor.
12. Consults with unit nurse manager, assistant director of nursing or shift supervisor regarding the need for disciplinary action of employees; participates in disciplinary action as necessary.
13. Adheres to facility policies and procedures, and regulatory requirements.
14. Identifies, reports, and documents incidents and accidents; participates in the investigation of incidents and accidents as necessary.
15. Supports and participates in the facility’s quality assurance program.
16. Participates on committees as assigned.
17. Completes records and reports as needed.
18. Adheres to professional codes of ethics and Standards of Care for LTC.
19. Ensures all occurrence reports, alleged resident abuse, and resident/family complaints are reported timely and appropriate follow-up is performed immediately. Immediately investigates resident complaints and resident care incidents. Reports occurrences to the ADON, DON, and the Administrator (LNHA), as appropriate. Assures documentation and investigation of incidents and accidents are thorough; monitors for accuracy and completeness.
20. Maintain competencies and improve knowledge and skills through continued learning and continuing education activities.
22. Promotes West View Manor’s vision and mission within the assigned unit.
23. This position requires the partner to wear a West View Manor nametag on their shirt or upper body at all times while on duty.
24. Additional requirements for this and other positions are covered in the Partner Handbook, which may be updated from time to time by the company in its sole discretion.
25. Other additional duties as assigned.
Clinical
1. Participates in resident assessment and care planning activities; reviews and revises residents’ assessments and care plans as needed.
2. Reviews, transcribes, communicates, and implements physicians’ orders.
3. Coordinates and participates in admissions, transfers, and discharges of residents.
4. Directs, supervises, and assists staff in delivering nursing care.
5. Gives direct care as needed.
6. Documents and supervises subordinates in documenting resident care.
7. Communicates and coordinates care with residents and their families or significant others.
8. Monitors nursing care activities of subordinates.
9. Administers treatments and other direct care.
10. Participates in medication management to promote optimal safety and effectiveness for residents by:
Administering medications as required.
Preparing and administering medications as prescribed.
Observing and evaluating residents’ responses to medications.
Evaluating effectiveness of timing, route, and form of drug.
Identifying and promptly communicating adverse drug reactions.
Maintaining narcotic records accurately.
Ordering or arranging for ordering of pharmaceuticals.
Notifying physicians of automatic stop orders.
Notifying supervisor of discrepancies in drug inventories.
11. Collects specimens as ordered.
12. Identifies restorative and rehabilitative nursing needs for residents; participates in developing and implementing restorative and rehabilitative nursing programs.
13. Respects residents’ rights; protects residents from abuse and neglect.
14. Communicates with residents’ physicians.
15. Makes rounds to assess residents’ status and evaluate care.
16. Assures residents’ rights are respected; protects residents from abuse and neglect.
17. Implements, practices, and assures staff adhere to infection control policies and procedures.
18. Prepares staff for resident admissions; assures rooms are prepared for resident admissions.
19. Assists with emergencies; administers cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
20. Assures residents have documented advanced directives and residents’ preferences are respected.
Required or obtain within the first 2 months of employment: American Heart Association- Basic Life Support
