Job Description SummaryPreliminary Design (PD) engineering, as a whole is, the architecture and system level cross-functional engineering discipline focused on designing and evaluating new, innovative and derivative propulsion systems and assessing them for key metrics include fuel consumption, weight, cost, and durability. The PD cycles engineer develops propulsion system cycle models and performs studies to evaluate the aero-thermal behavior of the system against key requirements. Studies may be performed to evaluate new engine architectures, new component and model technology integration, and existing and derivative engines for new technical requirements. As engine development progresses, the PD cycles engineer is responsible for executing studies using the robust PD processes for creation and optimization of cycles for performance, including aligning with expert teams and integrating component and module expert knowledge into the model, innovating alternate architecture concepts, performing design trade studies, supporting the selection and implementation of the best designs, and preparing the cycle design for reviews and audits for key tollgates and customer deliverables before NPI product launch.

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Serve as a key team member in Aviation preliminary design engineering and technology evaluation activities focused on cycle and performance modeling and design activities
  • Responsible for building, modifying and evaluating full engine architecture cycle models, specific engine sub-system. module and component models, and new technology models based on fundamental physics-based principles and GE experience based empiricism. Works to align architecture and module capability with product requirements (internal and external) and supports discussions on negotiating requirements, acceptable risks and margin management with the PD and systems teams.  Works closely with module and component expert design teams to correctly translate expert knowledge into architecture cycle models.
  • Becomes knowledgeable of best practices and how prior experience can be integrated into and leveraged by team.
  • Utilizes developing knowledge of a technical discipline and analytical thinking and technical experience to support improvements in PD processes and best practices
  • Develop ability to propose different and innovative solutions to meet program goals and achieve key requirements for a study. Uses technical experience and analytical thinking. Uses multiple internal and adjacent sources outside of own teams to arrive at decisions.
  • Execute with limited guidance the analysis / evaluation of assigned projects that meet business standards, practices and procedures and the product / program requirements
  • Recommend approach to meet the technical and program requirements
  • Formulate and implement plans to achieve technical requirements, schedules and contract commitments
  • Develop action plans to anticipate and respond to problems
  • Provide technical guidance to other personnel and global / cross-functional assigned teams
  • Assure proper documentation of technical data generated for the assigned projects and / or tasks consistent with engineering policies and procedures
  • Monitor and communicate project status, business issues and significant developments
  • Lead or participate in organizational efforts in assigned projects and / or tasks
  • Participate as a presenter or reviewer in technical and program reviews

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENT :

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited University or College
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in an aero-thermal and/or performance-based engineering position

Desired Characteristics

  • Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in an aero-thermal and/or performance-based engineering position
  • Experience with engine performance data, building and modifying engine cycle models, and evaluating propulsive and thermodynamic propulsion system performance
  • Experience with NPSS and ESP performance design tools
  • Prior experience working with global cross-functional teams
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills
  • Ability to guide and influence others
  • Demonstrated process orientation in approach to work
  • Exposure to commercial engine design requirements
  • Demonstrated ability to document, plan, market and manage programs that further the knowledge, understanding and capability of the business
