Job Description

About This Role  

Biogen is seeking a motivated and creative process chemist to join our small molecule development team in Cambridge, MA. This individual will provide support for chemical process research and development of Biogen’s small molecule programs from pre-clinical, clinical stage of development to commercial products.

This is an on-site role to be based at our Headquarters in Cambridge, MA. 

What You’ll Do  

Route scouting by applying organic chemistry knowledge and green chemistry principles.Evaluation/process improvements of existing/known routes.Working closely with analytical chemists and chemical engineers to understand/improve chemical process by applying fundamental process chemistry principles.Make valuable contributions to the selection of API and starting material synthetic routes.Work with drug substance leads to establish phase appropriate chemical process development plans for API.Prepare technical reports, patent application content, publications, and oral presentations.Provide updates to technical and asset teams and work collaboratively with other development functions to ensure alignment in the planning and execution of development activities.Contribute to CDMO selection and collaborate with external process development team(s).

Qualifications

Who You Are  

You love small molecule chemistry development and are passionate about interacting with various functions and partners to develop small molecule therapeutics and to advance Biogen’s pipeline. You love learning new technological skills and working through collaboration.

Required Skills  

Ph.D. in synthetic organic chemistry or closely related fields with 0+ years’ experience in small molecule chemical process development (including Ph.D. candidates graduating in May-June timeframe). Equivalent experience equals a M.S. degree with at least 4 years of relevant experience.In-depth knowledge and extensive experience in synthetic organic chemistry.Have scientific curiosity and give attention to details, both in performing experiments and keeping an electronic lab notebookExcellent written and oral communication skills and demonstrated ability to work effective in a team environment.Proven scientific track record through presentations and publications.Prefer to keep a neat and tidy lab bench and will always be mindful of workplace safety.

Preferred Skills  

Prior experience in enabling technologies particularly Biocatalysis is preferred.Working knowledge of cGMP protocols, ICH guidelines related to cGMP, technology transfers, manufacturing record review and approval.Drug substance development experience in advancing programs for all phases of development and experience in the preparation of regulatory filings.Track record of successfully collaboration within project teams and with contracted CDMO partners.
