Senior Legal Counsel

A leading global commodities trading organization is seeking a Senior Legal Counsel to support its Americas Gas & Power legal function, based in Houston, Texas. Reporting directly to the Americas GC, this role will provide comprehensive legal support for gas and power trading activities across North America. The position offers exposure to both physical and financial energy markets, supporting a broad range of structured and transactional matters. Key Responsibilities Draft, review, and negotiate trading and structured agreements, including power purchase and sale contracts (WSPP, EEI) and ISDA master agreements with Power Annexes. Advise on U.S. energy regulatory frameworks, including FERC, ERCOT, and ISO/RTO market rules. Support long‑term structured transactions such as tolling arrangements, battery storage (BESS), and virtual power plant (VPP) structures. Prepare and negotiate a range of commercial documents, including confidentiality, consulting, and licensing agreements. Collaborate with commercial, risk, compliance, and credit teams to ensure transactions meet legal and regulatory requirements. Candidate Profile Juris Doctor (JD) and active license to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction. Minimum of 5 years’ experience in the energy trading sector, with a focus on gas and power markets. Strong understanding of physical commodity trading and derivative products (e.g., NAESB, ISDA). Proven experience negotiating commercial and credit documentation, including guarantees and netting agreements. Ability to operate independently while collaborating effectively with commercial, credit, and compliance teams. Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with comfort advising senior executives and front‑office personnel.
