Assistant Chief Probation Officer – Sacramento County Additional 3.35% Management Differential applies to this position. Overview Under general direction, the Assistant Chief Probation Officer plans, organizes, and directs the day‑to‑day activities of all divisions within the Probation Department. This role implements policy established by the County Probation Officer and acts on their behalf when absent. Responsibilities Plan, organize, administer and coordinate varied probation functions across multiple divisions. Evaluate programs and projects, determining outcome measurements and appropriate adjustments. Implement and enforce departmental policies, philosophies, and procedures. Coordinate utilization of personnel and other resources within the department. Prepare, administer budgets, and plan for equipment, transportation, space, automation, and personnel. Interpret departmental functions and procedures to the public. Analyze complex technical and administrative problems, evaluate alternatives, and adopt effective courses of action. Manage professional and support staff including selection, discipline, motivation, training, and evaluation. Prepare clear and concise reports, correspondence, and other written materials. Establish and maintain working relationships with judicial officers, staff, and the community. Exercise sound, independent judgment within general policy guidelines. Knowledge and Abilities Knowledge of Management principles and methods (goal setting, program measurement, development, implementation, employee supervision). Functions, responsibilities, and authority of the County Probation Department. California Welfare and Institutional Code, Penal Code, Health and Safety Code, Government Code, Code of Civil Procedure, and other relevant laws and regulations. Organizational development, administration, strategic planning, budgeting, and monitoring. Management Information Systems. Public relations principles, grant funding and management, personnel practices, supervisory techniques, labor contract negotiation, and employee grievances. Ability to Plan, organize, administer, and coordinate varied probation functions. Evaluate programs and projects and determine outcome measurements. Implement and enforce departmental policies and philosophies. Coordinate use of personnel and other resources. Prepare and administer budgets. Develop and implement goals, objectives, policies, procedures, and work standards. Manage staff including selection, discipline, motivation, training, and evaluation. Prepare clear and concise written materials. Establish and maintain effective working relationships. Exercise independent judgment within general policy guidelines. Employment Qualifications Minimum Qualifications One (1) year full‑time experience in the class of Probation Division Chief in Sacramento County service; or Two (2) years full‑time experience in the class of Assistant Probation Division Chief in Sacramento County service; or Two (2) years full‑time paid experience in a management capacity assisting in formulating and implementing policies and procedures, planning, budgeting, organizing, and directing the activities of a major facility or division providing probation supervision. Full‑time paid experience is required unless volunteer experience is explicitly allowed. Part‑time paid experience may be prorated. Special Requirements Compliance with California Government Code §§ 1031. Ability to represent the Department and Chief Probation Officer at meetings, public forums, and business events, including evenings and weekends. Passing a criminal history and background check; felony convictions are grounds for disqualification unless fully pardoned. Probationary Period Twelve (12) months.
