Position Summary
This position is responsible for coordinating the operations and promotion of the Outdoor Equipment Rental Center (OERC), the indoor climbing wall, and the High Endeavors Challenge Course (HECC). Provide outdoor recreation opportunities to all ages and abilities.
MAJOR DUTIES

  • Devotes a majority of time to program development on campus and in the community.
  • Regularly directs the work of two or more other employees; makes recommendations to hire, promote, and discipline direct reports.
  • Supervises staff to ensure quality customer service.
  • Annually evaluates and updates policy and procedures manuals and staff manuals.
  • Develops and conducts staff training in compliance with SJC policy, HHPC policy, and outdoor industry standards.
  • Conducts all required safety inspections in accordance with industry standards; maintains equipment use logs; retires or replaces worn or damaged equipment.
  • Maintains OERC, HECC and climbing wall equipment and inventory; maintains equipment rotation schedules.
  • Assist the director with budget recommendations, equipment purchases and equipment disposal.
  • Coordinates billing, invoicing and payment with the Business Office and ensures accurate records are maintained for the Outdoor Equipment Rental Center.
  • Develops, schedules, promotes and facilitates outdoor recreation workshops, clinics and field trips.
  • Collaborates with faculty to provide experiential learning opportunities for students, clubs, and campus groups.
  • Establish, maintain, and sponsor an Outdoor Recreation Club in collaboration with Student Activities.
  • Develops and implements marketing plans for the OERC, HECC, climbing wall, and clinics/workshops.
  • Collaborates with administrative assistant in maintaining accurate and updated website and social media pages.
  • Weekend and holiday work is occasionally required. .
  • Serve as an active member on the Farmington's Outdoor Recreation Industry Initiative team.
  • Attend and represent SJC at local health fairs, workshops, educational events, and recreational opportunities.
  • Conduct monthly staff meetings to improve operational efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Performs related duties.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
  • Knowledge of outdoor recreation equipment maintenance and use.
  • Knowledge of route setting and challenge course facilitation principles.
  • Knowledge of outdoor industry standards for challenge course and climbing wall construction.
  • Knowledge of college policies and procedures.
  • Skill in the delegation of responsibility and authority.
  • Skill in the operation of computers and job related software programs.
  • Skill in decision making and problem solving.
  • Skill in interpersonal relations and in dealing with the public.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Director assigns work in terms of very general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include Association for Challenge Course Technology standards, American Mountain Guides Association standards, gear manufacturer instructions, and college and department policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
  • The work consists of varied management duties. The variety of tasks to be managed contributes to the complexity of the position.
  • The purpose of this position is to coordinate the operations and promote the Outdoor Equipment Rental Center, the indoor climbing wall, and the High Endeavors Challenge Course. Success in this position contributes to the safe and effective provision of services to students and community members.

  • Contacts are typically with co-workers, other college personnel, faculty, staff, students, vendors, high school and middle school students and teachers, business leaders, community groups, and members of the general public.
  • Contacts are typically to plan, coordinate, or advise on work efforts or to resolve operating problems and provide services, or to motivate or influence persons.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.
  • The work is typically performed in an office or outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to dust, dirt, grease, and machinery with moving parts. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.


SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

This position has direct supervision over assigned Outdoor Equipment Rental Center (OERC), High Endeavors Challenge Course (HECC), and Climbing Wall personnel.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in a course of study related to the occupational field, or its equivalent through training, education, and experience.
  • Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years of supervisory experience.
  • First Aid/CPR/AED certification
  • Wilderness First Responder certification
  • Certifications in one or more of the following are preferred: ACA Raft Instructor or Kayak instructor certification or equivalent; AMGA single-pitch certification or equivalent, CWA Climbing Wall instructor certification or equivalent; ACCT Challenge Course Facilitator certification or equivalent. If not certified, ability to obtain certification within 1 year of employment.
