The Dana Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI) seeks a Director of Advanced Practice Nursing to provide clinical oversight for Pediatric and Adult Advanced Practice Nurses with accountability to the Chief NP in the Departments of Nursing. This leader is responsible for APRN practice standards, regulatory compliance, credentialing, and professional advancement. The role entails ensuring continuous improvement and excellence in the quality and safety of patient care within interprofessional teams across adult and pediatric services. As a nurse leader in the Department of Nursing, the APRN director will participate in strategic decision-making at the nursing leadership level and will be an active participant of the NP Practice Committee, ensuring compliance with regulations and clinical practice standards around APP credentialing, onboarding, and practice oversight at DFCI.

The APRN director will provide clinical leadership and staff supervision, promoting professional growth for all APRN staff. This position requires systems thinking, inclusive behaviors, collaboration, clinical judgment, clinical inquiry, facilitation of learning, and advocacy for patients and staff. The director will utilize theoretical, evidence-based, and experiential knowledge to advance clinical practice and serve as a mentor to all DFCI APRNs. The Mission, Vision, and Core values of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Department of Nursing will be integrated into all areas of practice.

This position is 20 hours as APRN director and 20 NP clinical hours per week.

Practice Environment: accountable to Chief NP and ACNO:
  1. Maintains a clinical practice.
  2. Collaborates with ACNOs, Chief NP, PA leadership, and physician leadership to establish models of care, workflows, and job expectations for Nurse Practitioners at DFCI.
  3. Leads and participates in quality improvement and scholarly activities that contribute to improved patient outcomes, advanced clinical practice, and the role of APRNs.
  4. Disseminates work in literature and at local and national conferences.
  5. Creates an environment that supports and celebrates the professional growth of APRNs and registered nurses.

  • Shares strengths and areas for development with Associate Chief Nursing Officer (ACNO) and Chief NP as well as collaborating MD.

Other Responsibilities
  1. Serves as a clinical leader/coach and mentor to nurses and NPs throughout the enterprise.
  2. Promotes staff participation in personal and professional annual goal setting.
  3. Supports and encourages doctoral education enrollment and degree attainment within the APRN group.
  4. Serves as a leader within the nursing community, adhering to the standards of the discipline of nursing, including the ANA Code of Ethics.
  5. Provides ongoing formal and informal feedback regarding performance to staff members and champions peer review processes with the APRN staff.
  6. Delegates authority and/or responsibility as appropriate while maintaining overall responsibility for clinical practice.
  7. Demonstrates consistent, fair, and just leadership.
  8. Assures NP staff participation in local decision-making, DFCI nursing committees, and institutional committees.
  9. Conducts clinical reviews and participates in responses to patient complaints, quality management issues, and risk management requests as necessary.
Practice Excellence and Improvement
  1. Contributes to planning, implementing, and evaluating the quality of NP practice, including nurse-sensitive indicators and patient satisfaction in collaboration with the Chief NP.
  2. Utilizes performance improvement methodologies in collaboration with department and hospital-based quality leaders.
  3. Translates quality improvement findings into daily NP practice and strategic planning for meaningful clinical QI projects.
  4. Communicates and translates outcomes to staff and interdisciplinary colleagues, ensuring active participation in addressing quality improvement opportunities.
  5. Serves as a resource on clinical matters to promote optimal patient outcomes.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required
  1. Demonstrated clinical competency as an NP, continuing to contribute within a Disease center as a practicing NP.
  2. Analytical abilities to organize, supervise, and evaluate the work of others; develop and administer policies and procedures.
  3. Strong interpersonal skills to provide effective leadership to staff and interact with patients, visitors, physicians, and other clinical disciplines.

Minimum Job Qualifications:
  1. Current Nurse Practitioner Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
  2. Doctorate degree in nursing required.
  3. NP clinical experience and NP certification required (ACCN, ANCC, AANCP).
  4. Previous leadership experience with demonstrated management ability recommended.
  5. Minimum of 3-5 years oncology experience required, leadership experience preferred.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
  1. Supervises the APRN performance in areas of accountability to Medicine and Nursing.
  2. Supervises staff APRNs in his/her area of practice.

  1. Accountable to Chief Nurse Practitioner and the ACNO.
