DutiesThis position serves as the ShakeAlert System Technical Manager for the Earthquake Hazards Program ShakeAlert Earthquake Early Warning (EEW) project. This position leads and manages the staff and resources of the extensive, geographically distributed information technology (IT) infrastructure of the ShakeAlert EEW system.
As a Supervisory Computer Scientist within the Earthquake Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:Supervises system development and operations staff, including but not limited to planning, scheduling, prioritizing, assigning, and evaluating work based on project priorities, task difficulty, and suitability of workloads. Also performs all other supervisory related duties related to hiring, establishing performance standards, reviews performance, and recommends awards or takes disciplinary actions as appropriate.Coordinates, plans, and manages the development and delivery of technical support services, configuration, installation, optimization, and maintenance of computer and network infrastructure required for ShakeAlert production, development, testing, and support systems.Serves as the primary point of contact for technical integration of ShakeAlert with both the FEMA Integrated Public Alert and Warning System and Natural Resources Canada's EEW system.Acts as the lead architect for the design, development, and operation of the integrated, high-speed ShakeAlert computer hardware and software infrastructure and it's interconnected data acquisition, production, alert generation, and alert distribution components, and independent testing, integration, and support environments.Has primary responsibility of the cyber security of the ShakeAlert computer infrastructure which has been accredited under FISMA controls, which includes investigating and reporting security issues to USGS/DOI/US government security personnel.Requirements Conditions of EmploymentKey Requirements:Selectee may be subject to serving a one-year probationary period.This position requires completion of a one year supervisory/managerial probationary period, if one has not previously been completed.More requirements are listed under Qualifications and Other Information.Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position?Because this position requires travel for official business, the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment. Supervising or leading a team of high-level computer scientists and DevOps engineers.Managing cyber security requirements for a geographically distributed FISMA moderate real-time geophysical data processing system.Architecting and designing the integrated hardware and software infrastructure needed to support operationalizing real-time scientific analysis of geophysical data and forwarding of results to various delivery systems.Documenting procedures, methods, and techniques used, as well as developing new guidelines for use and implementation.Implementing cloud-based solutions for distributed processing systems.You must meet all qualification and eligibility requirements for the position by the closing date of the announcement.EducationExperience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g. Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social).
