Deputy Director of Regional Parks The County of Sonoma invites applications for the Deputy Director of Regional Parks. The position offers a starting salary up to $93.93/hour ($196,043/year) and a competitive total compensation package. Overview The Deputy Director provides leadership and operational oversight across major functional areas within the Department, including park operations and maintenance, natural resource management, community engagement, administration, and marina operations. This role also serves as a department-wide resource, assists in aligning departmental mandates, goals, and abilities, and acts on behalf of the Director during their absence. Responsibilities Directly supervise up to six staff members and set work priorities to align with departmental strategic planning. Oversight of up to six divisions: Community Engagement, Natural Resources, Operations, Maintenance, Marinas, Administrative services, Marketing, and Planning. Develop departmental processes and procedures. Evaluate and interpret changes to federal, state, and local laws or regulations that impact park services. Direct implementation of park program updates, policies, and regulations. Prepare the Regional Parks' $50 million annual budget, assist division managers with budgeting, pursue grants, and manage cost recovery and revenue. Represent Regional Parks in engagements with governmental agencies, community organizations, and the media. Collaborate with other County departments, local tribes, nonprofit partners, community organizations, and state and federal agencies. Qualifications & Experience Typically four years of progressively responsible experience in park management at a significant department or agency, including at least two years of supervisory and administrative experience. Significant coursework from an accredited institution in park management, recreation administration, horticulture, natural resources management, public or business administration, management, finance, accounting, economics, or a closely related field. A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree is highly desired. Pass a valid California Driver’s License and any required endorsements. Considerable knowledge of modern park and recreation land use principles, budget management, grant preparation, public administration, labor relations, environmental compliance (CEQA/NEPA), and public safety. Working knowledge of large governmental parks operations, capital projects, environmental regulations, mechanical plant operation, fire prevention, marketing, and public relations. Ability to plan, organize, and dictate comprehensive programs; interpret laws, regulations, and policies; develop policies and procedures; advise groups and boards; speak before audiences; develop training programs; supervise, evaluate, and coach staff; manage budgeting and forecasting; analyze data; make independent decisions; and handle multiple tasks simultaneously. Experience supervising staff and managing budgets. Developing and improving organizational systems and workflows. Negotiating contracts and drafting proposals. Overseeing risk management and performance systems. Managing municipal budgets and public meetings. Experience in park operations, natural resources, marinas, and maintenance.
