Substation Project Engineer - (Protection & Control)

Location: Chattanooga, Tennessee


Our client is seeking a motivated Project Engineer to manage a Protection & Control and Physical Design team working on high-impact projects for a client with a growing workload. This role requires a mix of project work and management, ensuring both hands-on technical involvement and leadership of project teams.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage and mentor a multi-disciplinary design team working on substation design projects.
  • Collaborate with client project managers, engineers, and subcontractors to ensure seamless project execution.
  • Monitor and control budgets, schedules, and resource allocation for multiple projects.
  • Oversee the development of detailed project scopes, ensuring clarity and alignment with client expectations.
  • Serve as the Engineer of Record for P&C design packages requiring a PE stamp.
  • Track and report on project status, ensuring all relevant stakeholders are informed of progress.
  • Perform project reviews to check for errors and optimize performance.
  • Plan and coordinate all phases of engineering/design work to meet project goals.


Required Skills:

  • Strong knowledge of medium to extra-high voltage substation protection & control systems and physical design layout requirements.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively interface with clients, engineers, vendors, and other utility personnel.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and scheduling software, with working knowledge of corporate accounting practices.
  • Experience with AutoCAD Electrical and project management tools.
  • Familiarity with the Project Management Institute’s (PMI’s) standards for Organizational Project Management (OPM).
  • Knowledge of utility equipment and systems, and experience managing multi-year substation design projects.


Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited university.
  • Minimum of 6 years of relevant project experience, leading substation design projects.
  • Experience with AutoCAD Electrical to complete P&C design packages is required.
