Position Overview SDOT is seeking a seasoned transportation planner to fill a full-time Senior Transportation Planner – Bike Program position within the Project Development Division. This role will shape the city’s bike network through high-impact projects identified by voters as part of the 2024 Seattle Transportation Levy. The ideal candidate will bring broad expertise in urban and transportation planning, a commitment to equity, sustainability, and safety, and a proven ability to lead complex, multi‑stakeholder efforts to plan and design new and upgraded bike facilities around Seattle. Key Responsibilities Manage programs associated with the Bike+ Element of the Seattle Transportation Plan, including strategic bike network planning, program budgeting, public engagement, and project prioritization and reporting. Accountability for delivering bicycle safety projects prioritized by collision frequency, severity, geographic equity (assessed through Race and Social Justice Initiative metrics), and guidance from the 2024 Seattle Transportation Plan and 2017 Trails Upgrade Plan. Track funding allocation and bike project prioritization to ensure equitable distribution of levy resources as projects are developed and scoped. Supervise and train staff; serve as a technical expert for complex transportation studies; provide technical and policy guidance to staff, department personnel, other departments, and agencies, leading decision‑making processes to resolve conflicts and move projects forward. Develop and execute public involvement plans; respond to customer and citizen inquiries; evaluate requests. Deliver presentations and project information to the general public, department leadership, and elected officials. Represent the Department at a wide range of forums, events, and task force meetings. Conduct post‑project evaluations. Support department goals in promoting diversity and social justice. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Transportation Planning, Urban Planning, or a related field. Minimum of three (3) years of transportation planning or development experience. Preferred: Master’s Degree in Engineering, Transportation Planning, Urban Planning, or a related field. Experience with biking and bikeway design. American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certification. Experience interacting with elected officials, bike advocates, project stakeholders, and city leadership on complex public projects. Knowledge of AutoCAD or similar Computer Aided DesignFamiliarity with City of Seattle, Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), and National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO) pedestrian and bicycle design standards. Work Environment / Physical Demands Hybrid work environment: minimum 3 days in a City office and 2 days remotely (40‑hour week). Field work in various weather conditions; public meetings, including after‑hours. Valid Washington State driver’s license or evidence of equivalent mobility. Additional Information The full salary range for this position is $58.45 – $67.95 per hour.
