Mechanical Equipment Repair Technician Civil Service: Official Service 1642B, subject to Civil Service testing procedures as they occur. Union: AFSCME Local 364 Grade/Rate: $38.19 Location: Peabody Public School Buildings and City of Peabody Municipal Buildings Schedule: Full-time, 40 hours per week, 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM The City of Peabody seeks a full-time professional mechanical equipment repair technician to handle projects in the Building Maintenance Division of the Facilities Department. Under the general supervision of the Facilities Director, works to provide a safe environment for all students attending school. Works to repair and maintain school system mechanical equipment. Major Responsibilities and Essential Duties: Maintain and repair mechanical tools and equipment, such as lawnmowers, snow blowers, lawn tractors, farm tractors, generators, and other mechanical tools and equipment as needed. Maintain records of service of equipment. Keep records of purchases of new equipment. Performs such other maintenance duties as deemed necessary for the Facilities Director. Responsible for small engine repair; diesel engine diagnostics, and hydraulic system functionality and repair. Responsible for all mechanical stock, i.e., parts, nuts, bolts, oil, etc. Works closely with annual parts and repair budget. Monitors and orders all fuel supplies. Responsible for thorough record keeping. Attends educational conferences to maintain industry certifications. Assist with all training on use of equipment. Supervises and trains employees as needed. Works independently and as a member of team. Additional duties and responsibilities as may be required or assigned. Qualifications: Education and Experience: Must have five years of full‑time or equivalent part‑time experience in repair of machinery and power equipment in which diagnosing, repairing, and implementing a preventative maintenance program was a major duty. Licenses & Certificate: High school diploma required. Graduation from a recognized trade or vocational school with a major in repair of machinery and power equipment desired. Knowledge of gas and diesel motors. Required skills: Must be able to perform mechanical maintenance and recognize equipment maintenance problems. Must be able to lift 50 pounds. Must be able to read and write in English and keep records as may be required. Must be able to hear sufficiently to communicate with the public and other workers effectively and perform work tasks safely. Must have a positive attitude, a strong work ethic, be highly motivated, detail oriented and a team player. Demonstrated excellent customer service skills, via telephone and in person, a must. All new employees must pass pre‑employment physical examination. Must pass Massachusetts criminal background check. New employee subject to 90 day probationary period. Job Environment & Physical Demands: Work Environment: The work environment involves risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations or environmental stress and requires a range of safety precautions, e.g., electrician work, cleaning chemicals, working at heights; work may be required to be done in extreme outdoor weather conditions or similar situations where conditions cannot be controlled. Work Schedule: 40‑hour work week. Emergency and Stand‑by Service: Employees in this position may be required to work overtime shifts.
