Job Summary The NYS Pollution Prevention Institute (NYSP2I) at the Golisano Institute for Sustainability at Rochester Institute of Technology is seeking an Associate Director who will oversee, guide and help implement the institute’s technical programs that provide hands‑on pollution prevention (P2) technical assistance to industry in a variety of sectors, help accelerate green technology to market, and provide sustainable supply chain assistance to New York state companies. Reporting to the NYSP2I director, the Associate Director will lead a team of engineers, scientists, and program managers, and will ensure that the Institute’s technical programs are strategically directed and implemented to deliver measurable results. Responsibilities include managing and mentoring staff, ideating solutions, overseeing applied research and development projects, and seeking supplemental state and federal funding to support these efforts. Job Responsibilities Provide guidance to technical staff in opportunity identification and project scope development; review project scopes and budgets; review technical reports and case studies; and may lead or participate as a technical resource on applied research/assistance projects. Supervise a team of engineers, scientists, and program managers, including hiring, performance management, disciplinary actions, goal setting, training, and delegation of work; develop organizational capacity and mentor staff. Leverage a comprehensive understanding of internal and industry standards to identify and resolve complex multi‑dimensional business and technical problems. Respond to requests from the director to provide data related to programs and to support strategic decisions. Oversee program management and execution; assist with setting metrics targets and oversee metrics collection, tracking and reporting progress to the institute director. Build strategic relationships with industry, trade organizations, university and MEP partners, and other key stakeholders; represent the Institute at conferences and events. Develop project concepts in response to environmental challenges impacting NYS and write grant proposals seeking project funding. Co‑develop the Institute’s direction with the NYS sponsor and the NYSP2I director; work with the program administrator and director to develop the annual work plan and metrics goals. Collaborate with the larger Golisano Institute for Sustainability organization on special projects and initiatives. Education / Experience Required Qualifications: Minimum of 10 years related work experience, including at least 5 years in a technical P2 position or a clean‑tech/sustainable‑technology environment. Minimum of 8 years of leadership experience with supervisory responsibility and managing direct reports. Experience in a manufacturing environment; expert‑level knowledge of manufacturing processes. Experience with technical proposal development and securing grant funding. Experience conducting and managing applied or use‑inspired research projects. Skills Demonstrated knowledge of engineering, environmental science, sustainability or clean energy. Strong technical writing skills. Highly motivated and self‑directed. Experience forming and building relationships with stakeholders. Ability to think creatively, solve complex problems, proactively adapt to a changing environment, act decisively, and inspire and mentor others. Strong project/program management skills. Strong communication skills at all levels, including individual contributors through C‑suite. Ability to identify opportunities, set short and long‑term program goals/metrics and develop a strategic approach, and coach others to do the same. Candidates must be eligible to work in the United States. Preferred Qualifications Master’s degree in a technical field (engineering, chemistry, environmental studies, sustainability, or related) or related field. Experience working with state and/or federal funding and contracting processes. Experience with technology commercialization or green‑tech incubation. Familiarity with NYS DEC regulations and environmental initiatives. Department / College Description The New York State Pollution Prevention Institute (NYSP2I) is a statewide technology development, transfer, and assistance center whose mission is to make New York state more environmentally sustainable for businesses, workers, and the public through more efficient use of raw materials, energy and water, and reductions in toxic chemical use, emissions to the environment and waste generation. NYSP2I is an integrated program of direct technical assistance, research, outreach, professional training, community grants, and academic educational program development. It focuses on accelerating green technologies and greening the supply chain, and is led by Rochester Institute of Technology in partnership with Clarkson University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Cornell University, Binghamton University and the New York Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP). Minimum Qualifications Full‑time employment. Salary range: $120,200 – $201,300.
