Assistant Corporation Counsel III – Special Federal Litigation Division The City of Chicago’s Law Department is seeking an attorney to serve as Assistant Corporation Counsel III (ACC) in the Special Federal Litigation (SFL) Division. The Division defends the City of Chicago in civil rights and state‑law liability cases involving alleged police misconduct or abuse of authority. ACCs represent the city in both federal and state courts, defend policy claims such as Monell claims, and defend sworn and civilian police personnel against allegations including false arrest and excessive force. Responsibilities Prepare and present litigation in federal and state courts, including drafting pleadings, motions, and arguing substantive motions. Conduct extensive motion practice, client counseling, discovery, expert witness preparation, and trial work in lower‑exposure cases. Assist in jury or bench trials and manage evidentiary hearings. Work under the supervision of SFL Supervisors, Chiefs, and the Deputy of SFL to achieve litigation goals. Qualifications Experience in litigation, including drafting pleadings, motions, and arguing motions. Superior writing, research, editing, and communication skills (written and verbal). Experience counseling and advising clients. Exceptional organizational and initiative‑driven work habits. Commitment to public service. Admission to the Illinois Bar (or eligibility for admission on motion to the Illinois Bar pursuant to Illinois Supreme Court Rule 705). Good standing with your state Attorney Registration & Disciplinary Commission. Resume. Law school transcript (official or unofficial). Two writing samples, at least one containing legal analysis in the form of a “legal brief” or litigation‑source material. Current printout of your attorney registration status from the Illinois ARDC website (or your admitted state bar’s equivalent including public record of discipline and pending proceedings).
