Journeyman Electrician

Kelly Government Solutions is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Journey-Level High Voltage Electrician to join our team. This role is responsible for ensuring the reliable and safe operation of the electrical infrastructure. You will be responsible for the installation, maintenance, operation, and repair of substations, distribution systems, and utility control systems.

Responsibilities:

  • Independently perform a variety of electrical tasks on high voltage (600V AC and above) and low voltage (less than 600V) systems as assigned by work orders, blueprints, and verbal instructions.
  • Diagnose electrical problems, determine appropriate repair methods, and ensure completed work adheres to shop standards.
  • Safely work in controlled access areas such as substations and confined spaces.
  • Perform switching and maintenance activities in substations, switchyards, pad-mounted equipment, and underground vaults.
  • Respond to power outages, including on-call duties during off-hours.
  • Troubleshoot and repair faulty equipment, including cable faults and street lighting circuits.
  • Install new high-voltage equipment, including conduit, wire, cable, and transformers.
  • Participate in plan and schematic reviews to provide management reports.
  • Collaborate with contractors to identify potential hazards and ensure safe working conditions.
  • Report unsafe conditions to management.
  • Plan and coordinate power shutdowns for high voltage system maintenance and repairs, adhering to department procedures.
  • Oversee the work of apprentices (if Journeyman level).
  • Maintain adherence to all safety rules and regulations.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Five years of relevant experience with electrical equipment 600V AC and above in an operations environment.
  • Journey-level knowledge equivalent to successful completion of a recognized four-year apprenticeship program.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of high voltage electrical theory and practices for independent work planning.
  • Understanding of, and commitment to complying with, electrical and safety procedures including the National Electrical Code and CAL-OSHA Standards.
  • Proven ability to operate tools of the trade (amprobes, amp meters, recording devices, etc.).
  • Ability to read and interpret single line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, and installation instructions.
  • Experience diagnosing electrical problems and performing equipment repairs.
  • Ability to perform new installations of high voltage equipment and electrical systems.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • California State Electrical Certification

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid California Non-commercial Class C driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to operate standard and automatic transmission vehicles, and potentially a high lift truck.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification.
  • NFPA-70E certification

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a California Non-commercial Class C driver's license.
  • Ability to safely operate boom lifts, scissor lifts, cranes, and forklifts.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks including standing/walking for extended periods, lifting to 50 lbs., grasping objects with varying degrees of force, frequent bending/reaching/squatting, and occasional climbing and working at heights.
  • Ability to wear and work comfortably in Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, hard hats, respirators, and full body suits.

Working Conditions:

  • May require overtime, evenings, weekends, and holidays, sometimes in inclement weather conditions.
  • Work in confined spaces and at elevated heights over ten feet.
  • Potential exposure to high-voltage electricity, radiation, electromagnetic fields, noise exceeding 80db TWA, allergens, biohazards, chemicals, asbestos, hot and cold temperatures.
  • Required to wear a uniform and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as specified.
