The Department of Pediatrics at Children’s Mercy seeks a creative and scholarly leader to serve as Division Director of Endocrinology. The Division Director will be responsible for leading the clinical, educational, research and quality missions of a comprehensive academic endocrinology program. Likewise, the Division Director will foster collaborative ties with the whole of the pediatric enterprise to ensure the welfare and improve the health of the children in the region. This is a clinical faculty position offering academic appointments at the University of Missouri – Kansas City School of Medicine and the Kansas University School of Medicine, rank to be commensurate with experience.
The foremost quality necessary for this position is vision for the field of endocrinology. Other desired characteristics include 1) a track record of developing young clinicians into future leaders in pediatrics; 2) interest in section academic infrastructure and finances; 3) experience in a high volume, diverse endocrinology service; 4) successful collaborations with administration, hospital and medical partners in managing endocrinology’s workflow while maintaining the highest value of care; and 5) developing a culture of high team accountability and professionalism.
The individual selected for this position will be a strategic and highly communicative leader who is a MD/DO or MD/DO/PhD and who is board certified in pediatric endocrinology. As Endocrinology Division Director, the individual reports to the Chair of Pediatrics.
The Division of Endocrinology and Diabetes at Children’s Mercy Kansas City is one of the largest in the country. Our team is comprised of more than 120 members and includes 29 pediatric endocrinologists, 5 nurse practitioners, registered nurses, certified diabetes educators, registered dieticians, psychologists and social workers. We provide endocrine care to more than 12,000 children in the region; in the past year, we have seen more than 26,000 patients across all our outpatient centers including several sites in the Kansas City metropolitan area as well as multiple distant sites in Missouri and Kansas.
Our clinical program cares for children affected by general endocrine disorders and for those diagnosed with diabetes mellitus. Our Diabetes Center was the first pediatric program in the United States to be accredited by the American Diabetes Association and today cares for nearly 2,400 children diagnosed with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Furthermore, our clinicians are actively involved in treating children with rare conditions who need a focused, multi-disciplinary and comprehensive approach.

Education
Education is a core tenet of Children’s Mercy. Children’s Mercy provides education opportunities to nursing students, medical students, residents and fellows, supporting over 1,400 learners annually. Children’s Mercy is the pediatric clerkship site for both UMKC and KU medical students, and provides elective rotations and sub-internships to students at any accredited allopathic or osteopathic medical school. Children’s Mercy is highly active in Graduate Medical Education with accredited residencies in pediatrics, med/peds, child neurology, pediatric dentistry, pediatric optometry and pharmacy. Children’s Mercy offers more than 40 fellowship programs across numerous areas, developing the next generation of subspecialists. Certificate and masters programs are also operated in conjunction with its academic partners, the University of Kansas (KU) and the University of Missouri – Kansas City (UMKC). Finally, our robust clinical training resources are augmented by research opportunities for learners at all levels.
Research
Children’s Mercy is dedicated to becoming a leader in pediatric research. A directed strategic planning initiative established the Children’s Mercy Research Institute (CMRI) to focus on research and research infrastructure. Through the generosity of two philanthropic gifts totaling $150 million, the hospital constructed a nine story, 375,000 square foot facility provide scientists state-of-the-art technology. In addition, these generous gifts help support funding for scientific programs and recruitment. Research conducted today includes basic science and clinical research in numerous areas including pharmacology, cancer, cardiology, genetic diseases and health outcomes. Areas of research strength include Precision Therapeutics, Genomic Medicine, Population Health, Emerging Pathogens and Innovations in Health Care Delivery. Beyond these areas of emphasis, Children’s Mercy and the CMRI also provide encompassing resources for Children’s Mercy faculty to pursue research, from developing a research question, biostatistical planning, grant application and management, and coordination of clinical trials.

Ideal Qualifications and Experience
- An MD or equivalent and board certification in pediatric endocrinology is required
