The Department of Laboratory Medicine at Cleveland Clinic is recruiting a Project Staff within the Diagnostic Molecular Microbiology Laboratory at Main Campus in Cleveland, Ohio. We are seeking a doctoral-level research scientist (with Ph.D. or equivalent degree/experience) with expertise in both wet-lab and bioinformatic components of next-generation sequencing to support the laboratory’s growing clinical development and translational research needs. The position is a full-time clinical Professional Staff appointment within the health system, and academic appointment through the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine is available and encouraged. The successful candidate will work closely with the Medical Director of the Molecular Microbiology Laboratory to collaboratively support the development, evaluation, and implementation of novel molecular infectious disease diagnostic, prognostic, and predictive assays. They will have the opportunity to conduct translational research, and to help bring impactful new diagnostic assays into the clinical space, contributing to both scientific advancement and tangible improvements in patient care.

The successful candidate will spend the majority of their effort on clinically-focused endeavors. These endeavors may include 1) designing, refining, and comparing molecular methods and technologies to detect and characterize infectious pathogens, 2) identifying and assessing novel biomarkers in virally-associated neoplasms, 3) interacting with the existing clinical laboratory development team to implement or support the launch of new clinical assays for use in patient care, and 4) collecting/analyzing clinical data related to test effectiveness, utilization, and patient impact.

In addition to the candidate’s primary focus on clinical work, the candidate will also support Cleveland Clinic’s research and educational mission. There will be the opportunity to author translational research studies related to test development outlined above and to participate in grant- and/or industry-funded studies and trials. However, the position is not dependent upon external funding, and the candidate is not required to independently obtain external funding. Further research opportunities exist in projects involving collaboration with other investigators in microbiology, infectious diseases, pathology, oncology, among others. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to mentor medical laboratory scientists and physician trainees.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. (or equivalent degree/experience) in molecular biology, microbiology, or a related discipline, and have demonstrated experience in both wet- and dry-lab components of next-generation sequencing, including experiment/assay design, library preparation, and downstream bioinformatic analysis. It is strongly preferred that candidates have a minimum of one year of post-doctoral research or equivalent experience in an academic or clinical setting, have scientific writing and presentation experience, and be motivated to work independently. Preference will be given to candidates with previous experience in microbial sequencing (whole genome sequencing, targeted amplicon sequencing, and/or metagenomic sequencing). Ideally, the candidate will have familiarity with open source and commercial bioinformatics resources/software for microbial NGS data analysis, and either have experience in or interest in acquiring additional computational bioinformatics skill sets. In addition to scientific expertise, the candidate should demonstrate excellent skills in communication and collaboration across disciplines, project management/leadership, troubleshooting, quality management, and professional behavior.

The Diagnostic Molecular Microbiology Laboratory is within the Microbiology Section of the Department of Laboratory Medicine. The laboratory provides expert diagnostic services for the Cleveland Clinic Health System (CCHS). The laboratory serves as the consolidated microbiology laboratory for CCHS hospitals throughout Northeast Ohio and Florida. The Diagnostic Molecular Microbiology Laboratory supports testing in bacteriology, mycology, mycobacteriology, parasitology, and virology, performing over 750,000 tests per year. Examples of assays performed in the laboratory include high-volume respiratory pathogen testing (ie. SARS-CoV-2, influenza), sexually transmitted infection screening (ie. gonorrhea, Mycoplasma genitalium), and viral load monitoring (ie. HIV, CMV), as well as lab-developed tests such as Legionella and Pneumocystis PCR, and 16s rRNA bacterial sequencing. The Section is comprised of a forward-thinking collaborative team including clinical microbiology medical directors and more than 120 medical laboratory scientists and technicians, which perform testing for patient care 24/7/365.
