Senior Engineering Manager, Seller Platform

San Francisco, United States Square Full time

Company Description

Since we opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely, and so has Square. After enabling anyone to take payments and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldn’t work together.

So we expanded into software and started building integrated, omnichannel solutions – to help sellers sell online, manage inventory, offer buy now, pay later functionality through Afterpay, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff. Across it all, we’ve embedded financial services tools at the point of sale, so merchants can access a business loan and manage their cash flow in one place. Afterpay furthers our goal to provide omnichannel tools that unlock meaningful value and growth, enabling sellers to capture the next generation shopper, increase order sizes, and compete at a larger scale.

Today, we are a partner to sellers of all sizes – large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex operations, sellers just starting, as well as merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time. As our sellers grow, so do our solutions. There is a massive opportunity in front of us. We’re building a significant, meaningful, and lasting business, and we are helping sellers worldwide do the same.

Job Description

Since our beginning, we have been helping sellers start and manage their own businesses. Square’s Seller Platform team is at the core of enabling sellers to thrive in the digital economy. The team is responsible for building and maintaining the platforms that map how Square’s sellers represent themselves, their locations, and their devices in our systems. This includes the Business Platform, Configuration Platform, and Devices Platform teams. The Seller Platform team owns multiple systems that help sellers get set up quickly and consistently.

As the senior engineering manager for Seller Platform, you will report to the Head of Ecosystem Platform, leading multiple backend engineering teams responsible for some of the most crucial and high throughput services that keep Square running. Join us in shaping the future of Square and empowering sellers to onboard and manage their business with minimal effort.

You will:

  • Define the strategic direction for the Seller Platform.
  • Lead, mentor, and grow a team of talented engineers across the Business, Configuration, and Devices Platforms.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement within the engineering team.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams including product management, design, and other engineering teams to deliver high-impact solutions.
  • Drive the execution of key initiatives to enhance platform capabilities and performance.
  • Ensure the technical roadmap is aligned with business objectives and customer needs.
  • Ensure best practices in software development, code quality, and system performance are upheld.
  • Act as the primary engineering point of contact for key stakeholders, including product leads, and business partners.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 4+ years in a management role, and 2+ years managing managers
  • 12+ years of software engineering experience
  • Proven experience in managing large-scale platforms and services
  • Strong track record of delivering complex, high-impact projects on time and within budget
  • Led, grown, and designed the structure for organizations of 30+ people
  • Deep technical expertise in backend engineering, with experience in distributed systems, microservices architecture, and cloud platforms
  • Excellent leadership and people management skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate teams
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across diverse teams and stakeholders
