POSITION SUMMARY Under the supervision of the Associate Branch Director, the Senior Director of Healthy Living provides strategic leadership for the Healthy Living Department, setting a clear vision and ensuring the delivery of high-quality wellness programs that support member health and engagement. This role fosters caring communities and life-changing relationships by creatively engaging members, building partnerships with community health organizations, and serving as a branch liaison. The Senior Director hires, trains, and supervises staff, ensures compliance with YMCA standards and certifications, manages departmental budgets, and collaborates with membership and marketing leaders to promote programs. As part of the Membership Engagement Team, the Senior Director provides branch leadership and supports the Annual Campaign through fundraising, volunteer recruitment, and committee work, all in alignment with the mission and policies of the YMCA of the Triangle Area. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Vision & Leadership Sets a clear vision for the Healthy Living Department, aligning programs with YMCA values and community needs. Provides strategic leadership to ensure delivery of high-quality wellness programs, including Group Exercise and Personal Training, that support member health and wellness goals at the Northwest Cary YMCA. Champions innovation by creatively engaging diverse populations and fostering small, supportive communities within the YMCA. Community Engagement Builds partnerships with local organizations to extend healthy living beyond YMCA walls, serving as the branch liaison with community health partners. Represents the YMCA on Association Teams focused on Healthy Living and Group Exercise, strengthening collaboration across branches. Supports the Annual Campaign through fundraising, volunteer recruitment, and committee participation. Staff Development & Supervision Hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates full-time and part-time staff to ensure excellence in service delivery. Directly supervises the Wellness Director. Oversees Group Exercise programming. Ensures staff readiness by maintaining required certifications and trainings, including CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Oxygen, First Aid, Personal Training, and Group Exercise certifications. Program Implementation Leads execution of signature association wellness programs such as LIVESTRONG, Diabetes Prevention, Energize, and Moving for Better Balance. Collaborates with marketing leaders (Senior Membership Experience Director and Regional Communications Director) to promote wellness programs effectively. Operations & Compliance Ensures effective fiscal management of Healthy Living Department budgets and resources. Maintains compliance with all branch and association standards in programming, administration, business practices, and operations. Provides branch leadership as part of the Membership Engagement Team (MET), supervising operations during assigned times and engaging members across the branch. Additional Responsibilities Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor to support the YMCA mission and branch success. QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor’s degree in recreation, education, or a related field preferred and 3-4 years of experience working in the health and fitness industry. Group Exercise Certification required to support class instruction. Experience in program development, budget management, personnel development, and supervision. Requires strong communication, public speaking and problem-solving skills. Requires a positive attitude, high level of initiative and professionalism, and enjoy working in and creating a strong team environment. Demonstrate initiative, effectively prioritize, and possess strong organizational skills. Ability to assist in the management of facilities, equipment, programs, personnel and the scheduling of assigned department. Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community. Multilingual desired but not required. WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS The physical demands described here represent those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Primarily office and program settings with frequent interaction in gyms, classrooms, and outdoor spaces. Moderate noise levels; may be louder during youth or community activities. Regular use of computer, phone, and other office technology. Frequent standing, walking, bending, and reaching; occasional lifting or moving up to 40 lbs. Some work performed outdoors in varying weather conditions. Flexible schedule required — may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and occasional travel between branches or sites. Must be able to provide valid identification for employment eligibility verification. Must possess a valid driver’s license and have access to reliable transportation. A clean driving record is required to meet YMCA insurance standards. Travel between branch and/or site locations, and to off‑site meetings and events is required.
