INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY DIRECTOR PROFILE Cary, North Carolina is a diverse community recognized for its quality of life and strong municipal services. Information Technology Department The Cary IT Department drives the Town’s digital transformation, delivering secure, innovative solutions across cybersecurity, cloud services, and data management. The department supports 30 full‑time staff and is instrumental in pioneering smart‑city initiatives and community‑wide technology projects. Information Technology Director In collaboration with the Town Manager’s Office, the Information Technology Director leads overall IT operations, aligns technology strategy with municipal goals, and serves as a key member of the Town’s executive management team. Essential Responsibilities Act as a key member of the Town’s management team, leading initiatives across all aspects of local government. Provide leadership in hiring, training, supervising, evaluating, and, when necessary, disciplining department employees. Collaboratively develop and implement technology strategies and roadmaps that support Cary’s long‑term vision, operational needs, and fiscal realities. Partner with Cary leadership and directors to identify needs, recommend solutions, and ensure current and future technology aligns with internal and external operational priorities. Manage day‑to‑day IT operations, including applications, networks, cloud services, and end‑user support; lead technology service delivery and modernization projects that anticipate needs of citizens and employees. Provide executive leadership to a diverse technology services organization, establishing performance standards and operational excellence. Collaborate with the security team to safeguard systems, data, and community trust; work with the CISO to review and ensure timely updates to business continuity and disaster recovery planning. Negotiate contracts and manage vendor relationships to ensure best value and alignment with Cary’s mission; leverage partnerships with technology providers and community stakeholders to expand capabilities. Required and Preferred Education and Experience The selected candidate must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, majoring in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field. Preferred are advanced degrees, professional certifications such as ITIL, PMP, TOGAF, CISSP, CISM, or cloud‑architect credentials (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud). Candidates must have a minimum of 10 years of progressive IT experience, including at least 7 years in leadership roles, and preference will be given to those with government or complex enterprise experience. Conditions of Employment Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record and successfully complete drug testing, background checks (including criminal history, motor vehicle records, education verification, and credit history review), and satisfactory reference checks before employment.
