MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) is a frontline perioperative registered nurse leader who functions in an expanded role, working in collaboration with the surgeon and health care team members to achieve optimal patient outcomes and improve efficiency of operations. Responsible for the delivery of safe, effective, and quality patient-family centered care through the continuum of perioperative care, including preoperative, intraoperative surgeon assistance, and postoperative care for all patient populations. Functions as an RN first assistant during operative and other invasive procedures, while maintaining the ability to function in additional roles including but not limited to circulating nurse, surgical scrub, and PFC when required. The RNFA does not concurrently function as an assistant and a surgical scrub or circulating RN. Maintains practice in accordance with organizational standardized procedures, scope of practice, credentials, privileges, experience, education and competency verification. This position requires flexibility of hours. The RNFA role exists to provide opportunity for surgical assistant practice over a period of two years to support achievement of certification requirements for progression to the CRNFA role.

Essential Job Functions:

Participates in ongoing educational and competency verification activities applicable to RN and RNFA activities. Serves as an educator, mentor, consultant, and resource to peers, colleagues, and others in relation to RNFA activities, RN and surgical scrub roles and responsibilities. Demonstrates strong critical thinking skills and ability to guide the practice of others through influence or escalation to department leadership for course correction.

Collaborates effectively with other disciplines as applicable. Participates in quality review and performance improvement projects. Participates in the performance appraisal process. Uses problem-solving and conflict resolution skills to foster effective work relationships with team members. Maintains regulatory, credentialing, and privileging requirements required for practice as an RNFA. Consults with physicians and other health care professionals as indicated regarding patient care issues and quality of care issues for the robotic population served. Provides leadership in nursing excellence, supporting departmental and organizational initiatives such as effective handoff of care and transfer of care, national patient safety initiatives, etc. Delegates tasks according to the state Nurse Practice Act and job descriptions. Documents nursing care accurately, completely, and legibly.

Assists with daily OR schedule as determined by the department management leadership team to attain OR efficiencies maintaining safe patient care. Follow selected surgical patients postoperatively specific to RNFA activities (eg, postoperative rounding, dressing changes) in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team. Performs duties as first surgical assistant for multiple surgical services lines, including but not limited to robotic surgery, orthopedics, neurosurgery, urology, general surgery, gynecology, and ENT surgical procedures in the main OR in accordance with training and licenses. Facilitates the delivery of patient care by working with team members to set up cases and meet OR schedule efficiencies. Demonstrates skills and judgment of an RN first assistant during operative and other invasive procedures by adhering to organizational Standardized Procedure for RNFA, which may include, but is not limited to, activities such as providing exposure through correct use of instruments, retractors, suction, and sponging techniques; handling and dissecting tissues in collaboration with the surgeon; clamping blood vessels, coagulating bleeding points, and ligating vessels in collaboration with the surgeon; placing drains as directed by the surgeon; and suturing muscle, fascia, subcutaneous, and skin in collaboration with the surgeon. Provides intraoperative care in accordance with industry standards as identified by AORN, organizational standardized procedures, and state board of nursing. Assesses patients at intervals in accordance with facility or health care organization policies and procedures. Participates in preoperative assessment and planning for surgical patients specific to RNFA activities (eg, anatomical exposure, wound closure) in collaboration with perioperative team members. Develops an individualized perioperative patient plan of care. Evaluates the patient's progress toward attaining outcomes. Promotes the mission, vision, and values of the organization and department. Acts as a role model for others. Patient population is 16 and older. Assumes all other duties and responsibilities as necessary and assigned.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education

Bachelor's degree required or in progress at time of hire with completion within 24 months of hire. Approved RNFA certificate of program completion required

Minimum Work Experience and Qualifications

Minimum five years OR experience with combination of scrub and circulating experience required.

Leadership capabilities. Ability to function as mentor to circulating nurses, surgical technicians, and other RNFA candidates. Sets standards for quality-of-care delivery and holds others accountable to expectations. Excellent customer service skills, organizational skills, and multitasking abilities. Preferred Work Experience and Qualifications

Experience in preoperative and postoperative patient care and pathway development preferred

Required Licensure, Certification, Registration or Designation

Current unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license issued by California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) Current Basic Life Support Provider (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support Provider (ACLS) issued by American Heart Association. Current Certified Perioperative Nurse (CNOR) issued by the Competency & Credentialing Institute (CCI)
