Job Description Permanent Purpose and Scope Functions as part of the dialysis health care team in providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse in accordance with organization policies, procedures and training and in compliance with regulations set forth by the corporation, state, and federal agencies. Responsible for the setup and operation of hemodialysis machines, maintaining a safe and clean working environment, and supporting the organization’s commitment to the Quality Enhancement Program (QEP) and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities. Principal Duties and Responsibilities Patient Related – Education Provide patient‑specific detailed education regarding adequacy measures (Online Clearance Monitoring, Adequacy Monitoring Program, Urea Kinetic Modeling) and disease process/access. Patient Related – Treatment Welcome and inquire about patient wellbeing since last treatment. Evaluate vascular access for patency, perform cannulation, and administer heparin as delegated or state‑law‑approved. Obtain pre‑ and post‑treatment vital signs, weight, and perform access evaluation. Initiate dialysis treatment per prescribed orders, including blood flow (QB) and dialysate flow (QD). Monitor patients’ response to therapy and evaluate intradialytic problems, providing interventions per physician orders. Document vital signs and treatment parameters on the Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes. Discontinue treatment according to established procedures, evaluate patient prior to termination of venous access, and apply hemostasis and appropriate dressings. Perform and record pre‑ and post‑dialysis evaluation, weight, and vital signs. Calculate and enter individual patient dialysis machine programming for ultrafiltration (UF) goals, treatment time, and UF modeling. Ensure safety alarms (including Narrow Venous Limits 160) are enabled and perform machine safety checks. Obtain and prepare laboratory specimens, clean spills immediately, and organize supplies to prevent wastage. Support patients with self‑care under RN supervision. Staff Related Assist in training direct patient care staff on appropriate programs under nurse supervision. Participate in recruitment, orientation and ongoing training of clinical staff. Assist with competency evaluations, audits, and patient care standard enforcement. Education/Communication Adhere to and promote organization business policies, ethical practices, and environmental integrity. Clean and disinfect machines, chairs, equipment, and surrounding areas between treatments. Perform pretreatment alarm and system testing (Pressure Holding, Solution Delivery System). Record Keeping Document continuous participation in CQI activities and enter all treatment data accurately. Ensure treatment sheets are complete, nursing signatures documented, and any omissions corrected. Prepare initial patient charts, lab requisitions, collect and label lab samples, and coordinate courier delivery. Infection Control Assist in collecting data for infection control audits and support staff & patient adherence to protocols. Participate in infection control education of patients and families under designated leadership. Transitional Care Unit Follow newly admitted patients for the first 4 weeks, coordinating transitional dialysis care. Reinforce education and care related matters, liaise with FKC staff, and enhance patient experience. Assist patients in understanding home dialysis options, demonstrations of peritoneal dialysis set‑up, and assist with transition to modality choice. Assist in supply ordering and inventory for the Transitional Care Unit. Physical Demands and Working Conditions Day‑to‑day work includes desk and computer tasks and interaction with patients, staff, and physicians. Position requires travel between assigned facilities and local community locations; travel to regional, business unit, and corporate meetings may be required. Work environment is a health‑care facility with temperature control and moderate noise; may be exposed to infectious and contagious materials. Provides direct patient care involving heavy lifting (up to 40 lbs., 5 ft.), frequent standing, bending, pushing/pulling equipment (up to 15 lbs.). Two‑person assist program and material assist devices available for heavier items. Education and Licenses High School diploma or G.E.D. required. Must meet CMS‑approved state and/or national certification requirements within the required state timeline. All appropriate state licensure, education, and training (if any) required. Demonstrated commitment to organization culture, values, and customer service standards. Experience and Required Skills Previous patient care experience in a hospital setting or related facility preferred. Continued employment depends on successful completion of the organization dialysis training program and CPR certification.
