Position Summary

We are looking for a Field Network Engineer who will be responsible for engineering and implementation of our fiber based GPON/XGSPON service delivery and access networks. Your primary duties will include supporting the design, engineering and implementation, test, turnup and certification of fiber-based gigabit optical network equipment and networks. This will include hardware, network element software, and some other related systems. You will support recovery operations as necessary and provide guidance as required. Trouble shooting, repairing and replacing faulty network hardware components when necessary. You may also be working closely with the users of our network to identify potential issues and fix existing problems.

To be a successful candidate, you will need to understand carrier transport, network access infrastructure, network hardware and design. You will need to be able to support implementation, administration and troubleshooting of network devices including optical transport hardware, routers, switches, and controllers. This individual ideally will also have knowledge of application transport and network infrastructure as well as DC power implementation and administration.

Regular, weekly travel around the project will be a requirement for this field position.

Field Network Engineer critical responsibilities:

Assist and oversee the development of a regional consumer Internet Service Provider
Work collaboratively with your peers to support the development and construction plan
Travel throughout the region supporting the “turn up” of optical switching locations.
Follow the implementation plan to successfully turnup these locations while working closely with the network operations center (NOC) and following the engineering playbook to implement and certify these sites into the growing network footprint.
Work closely with the Field Operations Team to test the new site and hand off a fully certified site ready to accept FTTH customers.
Maintain our FTTH service delivery networks which may include systems software upgrades, adds, moves and changes to our hardware and new equipment configurations.
Support disaster recovery operations and preparation.
Support after hours preventive maintenance, service impacting changes, backups and/or upgrades.
Support and implement network security measures.
Troubleshoot, diagnose and resolve hardware, software, and other network and system problems.
Replace faulty network hardware components when required.
Work with backhaul carriers and service providers to resolve transport outages and issues.
Along with Network Operations Center teams, monitor network performance to determine if adjustments need to be made.

Qualifications of a strong candidate:

Bachelor’s degree in information technology, computer engineering or related field of study preferred.
Appropriate networking technical certifications.
Proven experience with passive optical networking (GPON/XGSPON).
Strong understanding of network infrastructure, network hardware and transport layers.
Ability to think through problems and visualize solutions.
Emotional and intellectual agility, while working in a fast-paced environment.
Strong cross functional collaboration and communications with operations peers in the field.
Ability to implement, administer, and troubleshoot network infrastructure devices.
Ability to create accurate network diagrams and installation documentation for design, planning and implementation of network communication systems.
Network security experience.
Ability to lift 50 pounds.
Ability and willingness to work on call and after hours.
Ability to pass pre-employment background check.
Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
