Aurora Mental Health & Recovery (AMHR) — a leading nonprofit dedicated to providing comprehensive behavioral health services – is seeking a strategic, mission-oriented leader to become its next Chief Financial Officer (CFO). This CFO will join an experienced executive team devoted to expanding access to high-quality mental health and recovery services, advancing AMHR’s mission to inspire courage and build hope across Denver, Colorado.
Based in Aurora, Colorado, AMHR is a $90M nonprofit that serves nearly 18,000 clients annually through a wide range of behavioral health services, including outpatient care, crisis intervention, residential treatment, and specialized programs for immigrant and refugee communities. AMHR’s network of care includes the newly established Cultural Development & Wellness Center, which serves as a Center of Excellence supporting immigrant and refugee populations in Colorado. As a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBHC), AMHR meets national standards for integrated, client-centered care, offering accessible, 24/7 crisis support to those with mental health and substance use needs.
Location:
Aurora, located within the Denver metropolitan area, is a vibrant, diverse region known for its cultural offerings, family-friendly neighborhoods, and abundant outdoor recreation opportunities. With over 300 days of sunshine annually and easy access to the Rocky Mountains, Aurora provides an outstanding quality of life, blending urban amenities with scenic natural surroundings. In addition, Aurora is one of the most diverse cities in the state and the third most diverse community in the nation. Celebrated for its rich culture and welcoming communities, Aurora’s diversity shapes the city’s identity - offering a unique blend of cultural experiences, global cuisines, and vibrant neighborhoods that reflect the backgrounds of its residents.
As a leader in behavioral health services, AMHR embraces this diversity, fostering an inclusive culture that values the unique perspectives and experiences of both clients and staff. The organization is committed to providing culturally responsive care that meets the needs of its diverse client base, ensuring that everyone feels seen, respected, and supported.
AMHR also recognizes the importance of flexibility and work-life balance through its hybrid work model. This model allows staff to engage with clients and colleagues both in person and remotely, supporting a collaborative and adaptable work environment that enhances employee well-being. AMHR’s commitment to diversity and flexible work reflects its dedication to cultivating a healthy, inclusive workplace where staff and clients thrive. This role presents a unique opportunity for an experienced financial leader to shape the future of behavioral healthcare in the Denver metro area and make a meaningful impact across the community.
The Opportunity
As the CFO at AMHR, you will hold the top financial position and be responsible for driving the financial performance of the organization. Serving as a crucial strategic partner, the CFO will lead AMHR’s financial operations, providing insight and guidance to support the organization’s growth as the premier behavioral health provider in the Denver metro area and beyond.
Reporting directly to the CEO and as an integral member of the executive team, the CFO will offer strategic advisement on developing the people and systems that ensure AMHR’s financial health and long-term success in a dynamic healthcare landscape. This role involves being an active, hands-on leader who oversees a wide array of financial, business management, and administrative functions. As a representative of the organization, the CFO will engage regularly with internal teams and external partners.
Given the current priorities, the new CFO will be tasked with a balanced approach to both strategic and operational responsibilities, focusing on:
- Establishing a strong foundation as a C-suite leader and strategic advisor
- Managing change, compliance, and organizational success with alternative and value-based payment models
- Ensuring compliance and continued alignment with CCBHC standards, including a recent switch to PPS payment methodology.
- Designing and refining systems and infrastructure to support recent expansion, current needs, and future growth
- Developing talent and ensuring succession planning
- Aligning culture and processes with strategic objectives
This role is an opportunity to help shape AMHR's future and make a meaningful impact on behavioral health services for individuals and families throughout the region and beyond.
CANDIDATE PROFILE
To be successful leading AMHR’s finance, facilities, and contracting teams, the “Ideal" candidate should:
- Bring strong technical and strategic planning skills and an ability to lead strategic initiatives, ensuring a stable and successful financial future for the organization by anticipating industry changes and proactively planning for long-term sustainability
- Hold an in-depth knowledge of Medicaid reimbursement models, specifically in the behavioral health space, and a range of healthcare contracting practices, paired with hands-on experience in cost analysis. A comprehensive understanding of the Colorado State System preferred, with insights into AMHR’s unique standing among CSNP’s and the ability to leverage partnerships and payment opportunities, especially under the state’s newly implemented payment structures.
- Possess expertise in managing evolving funding streams, particularly in navigating the transition from capitation-based revenues to value-based and prospective-payment models and adapting to the challenges of shrinking COVID-era funds.
- Demonstrate financial agility and accountability, managing cost reporting and base unit cost adjustments to stay aligned with new state requirements, while ensuring efficient use of resources, maintaining financial stability, and demonstrating strength in forecasting.
- Strong stakeholder and negotiation skills and excels working with key stakeholders, including Medicaid and ASO payers, state funding departments, and trade organizations, to advocate for AMHR's financial interests and ensure compliance with evolving state healthcare models.
- Have a business-minded approach to financial leadership, with a focus on maximizing revenue, financial efficiency, and oversight of the organization’s investment portfolio in partnership with AMHR’s partner banking institutions.
- Experience in mergers and acquisitions, as AMHR considers potential expansion and strategic partnerships in the next few years.
- Balance a high-level, visionary perspective with attention to financial systems’ accuracy and reliability, providing timely, precise financial information to the CEO, executive team, and Board. Experience in financial modeling and data-driven decision-making is essential.
- Possess a strong commitment to mission and community needs, including serving a diverse community, while ensuring that the organization’s staff upholds AMHR’s values of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion.
- Provide effective leadership for direct reports in finance and facilities, ensuring a high level of operational efficiency across the finance team and fostering a cohesive financial management strategy.
- The ideal candidate will have experience managing a real estate portfolio, overseeing capital budgeting for building improvements, and oversight of Director of Plant Operations for coordination with general contractors and facilities teams to ensure optimal use of resources.
- Hold a bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related field. Master’s degree and or CPA/CMA certification strongly preferred.
- Have at least seven years of experience in budget development, projections, and financial analysis within a diverse healthcare environment.
Compensation
AMHR is offering a very competitive compensation package with pay in the range of $225,000 to $325,000 and excellent benefits.
