Position Summary

Assists the Chief Engineer or Captain with the responsibilities related to the safe operation, maintenance, and repair of engines, electrical systems, and environmental systems. In the absence of the Chief Engineer on board the equipment the Outside Mechanic will manage all engine room crew.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties

  • Requisition spare parts, fuel, lubrication oils, and other material needed for the efficient and safe operation of the engine room.
  • Assign engine room personnel to perform regular maintenance and repairs to pumps, motors, diesel engines, and other equipment on the dredge and attending plant.
  • Conducts JSA (Job Safety Analysis) meetings.
  • Supervise repairs to ensure that they are performed in accordance with specifications and standards.
  • Keep accurate records in order to create engine room logs and inventories.
  • Remove, repair, or replace defective parts and write work orders.
  • Track and order fuel, oil, and water.
  • Person in charge of fuel transfers.
  • Determine maintenance priorities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief Engineer or Captain.
  • Follows company and work site safety policies/procedures and commits to an "Incident and Injury Free" work environment.
Qualifications
  • 5+ years of experience as Watch Engineer.
  • Ability to work 84 hour work week.
  • Ability to live aboard vessel for full rotation.
  • Ability to demonstrate thorough knowledge and skill to perform all essential functions of craft workers under his/her supervision.
  • Ability to perform task planning to safely and efficiently carry out all aspects of work assigned, train/ teach safety practices, policies and procedures.
  • Have a working knowledge of the scheduling, material control and unit manhour performance, estimating fundamentals and job cost management systems.
  • Ability to understand, follow and transmit written and oral instructions and communicate effectively with craft workers under his/her supervision and management/supervision.
  • Must be a good communicator, motivator, and team player.


Requirements
•The person in this position needs to constantly move about a construction/industrial site,
so should be able to stand, walk, sit, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, and/or crawl
•Constantly works in a construction environment and will be exposed to changing outdoor
weather conditions
•Work irregular hours, weekends, overtime and holidays as required
•May be required to use ladders/mechanical platforms/manlifts/scaffold to access
required equipment/work areas (may exceed 200 feet), so must be able to climb and
maintain balance on formwork, steel formwork, stairs, ladders and scaffolds
•Move and work in and around confined and cluttered places, and uneven surfaces
•Must be able to complete tasks in a noisy and dusty environment
•May be required/able to move items weighing up to 50 pounds across
construction/industrial site
•Must have required tools
•Observe and comply with all safety and project rules, perform other duties as required
•Ability to pass pre-access drug and alcohol testing, fit for duty medical and background
check
•Must possess a valid Driver's license
•TWIC - Transportation Worker Identification Credential (preferred)
•Must be able to tolerate rough seas, vibrations, heat, harsh weather conditions, confined spaces, and high noise levels.
