Job Title: Senior Benefits Manager

Reports To: Director of HR


Position Overview:

We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Benefits Manager to lead and manage the benefits programs. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in administering benefits for a manufacturing environment, with experience in unionized workplaces, and a solid understanding of Canadian benefits regulations and practices. The Senior Benefits Manager will play a critical role in designing, implementing, and managing comprehensive benefits strategies to meet the needs of our diverse workforce while ensuring compliance with relevant laws and union agreements.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the design, implementation, and administration of the company’s benefits programs, including health, dental, retirement, life insurance, disability, wellness programs, and employee assistance plans.
  • Collaborate with HR and labor relations teams to manage unionized employee benefits, ensuring alignment with collective bargaining agreements (CBAs) and providing expert guidance during contract negotiations.
  • Ensure benefits programs comply with all federal, provincial, and local regulations, including the Canadian Employment Standards, Pension Benefits Standards Act (PBSA), and other relevant labor laws.
  • Manage relationships with external benefit providers, including insurance companies, pension administrators, and wellness program vendors. Negotiate contracts, review performance, and ensure service delivery meets organizational expectations.
  • Develop and deliver communication strategies to educate employees about their benefits options, changes, and updates. Provide one-on-one support to employees regarding their benefits questions or claims.
  • Monitor and report on the effectiveness of benefits programs, conducting regular audits and assessments to ensure cost-effectiveness, competitiveness, and employee satisfaction. Provide leadership with data-driven insights and recommendations for program improvements.
  • Oversee the benefits budget, working closely with finance to ensure costs are managed effectively while maintaining a high-quality benefits offering for employees.
  • Lead the design and implementation of employee wellness programs, focusing on promoting overall health and well-being to improve engagement and productivity.
  • Work closely with HR, finance, payroll, and legal teams to ensure seamless integration of benefits programs with other HR systems and initiatives.


Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in benefits management, with at least 3-5 years of experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Extensive experience with unionized benefits programs and collective bargaining agreements (CBAs).
  • Strong understanding of Canadian benefits and regulatory requirements, including provincial and federal laws, pension standards, and tax implications.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Deep knowledge of benefit plan design, administration, and compliance.
  • Strong understanding of Canadian pension and benefits legislation, including provincial healthcare and retirement plan regulations.
  • Familiarity with collective bargaining processes and labor relations.
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to present complex benefit information in an understandable manner.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to make data-driven decisions and optimize benefits programs.
  • Experience with benefits management software and HRIS platforms.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in a large-scale manufacturing environment with a diverse workforce.
  • Previous experience working with union representatives in a multi-union environment.
