Founded in 2008, Curious Comedy Theater is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of children, adults, and seniors through the art of comedy with an emphasis on amplifying underrepresented voices. We achieve this goal by producing shows, classes, and special events in our two venues in NE Portland, by producing festivals that showcase underrepresented artists, through outreach programs in the community, and by developing digital content and an online channel. The Managing Director is responsible for the day-to-day administration and operations of Curious Comedy Productions. This includes financial management, assisting with fundraising events, HR and staff oversight, maintaining licenses and insurance, and office management. The Managing Director is also expected to help the organization increase and discover new earned and unearned income sources and continue to grow sustainably over time. Hours will be primarily 9-5 in the office with some nights and weekends for special events and occasional theater staff training and oversight. Salary commensurate with experience in the $50,000-$60,000 range. Primary Responsibilities General - Overseeing the maintenance of the general calendars for Curious Comedy shows, classes, workshops, rehearsals, and rentals (Google and Schedgeup). Strategic Plan - Work with the Artistic Director to create, implement, and evolve the five-year strategic plan. Solicit and consider input from all stakeholders, including board, staff, performers, and volunteers. Budgeting - Work with the Artistic Director to create an annual budget and to present it to the Board of Directors for approval. Generate monthly and quarterly reports of budget vs actuals and adjust the budget as needed. Hold managers accountable to maintaining their departmental budgets. Finance - Use QuickBooks to perform bookkeeping and to track accounts payable and receivable. Prepare weekly deposits in accordance with the financial controls policy. Provide tax information to our tax accountant, employees, and contractors. Use Gusto to process bi-monthly payroll. Administration and Office Duties - Maintain corporate status, annual licenses, and insurance policies. Open and handle mail and incoming general email inquiries, file documents, and perform general office supply maintenance. Handle special insurance certificates as needed by us for additional space rentals or provided to us by renters. Staff Management – Perform HR duties and maintain records. Help create, update, communicate, and implement policies. Field inquiries from employees. Ensure compliance with State and Federal Agencies' requirements. Oversee department managers and all employee reviews, raises, disciplinary actions, and adherence to budgeted hours. Board Activities - Schedule board meetings. Prepare agenda/materials/reports for meetings. Update board member handbook and plan board appreciation activities. Development/Fundraising - Work with Artistic Director and Board of Directors to create fundraising strategy and schedule for fundraising events, grant opportunities, and individual donation drives. Works with appropriate Board and staff members in planning, coordinating, and implementing events. Coordinate annual Individual Donation mailing. Create and send thank you letters to donors. Maintain master donor list. Festivals, Special Guests, Outreach - Help keep events on budget and on schedule. Administer and coordinate employees, volunteers, and space. Grants and Corporate Sponsorships – Provide Artistic Director with financial data for grant applications. Work together on corporate sponsorship programs. Qualifications Curious Comedy’s ideal Managing Director candidate will have extensive experience, knowledge, and skill in executive administration. Experience in nonprofit and small to midsize theater arts organizations strongly preferred. Additional Qualifications Combination of education and experience in administration, amounting to a minimum of 3 years of working in a similar setting. 5 years preferred. Must have the drive, passion, enthusiasm, and strength to be part of the leadership team for the organization. Demonstrate effective management skills that align with artistic values. Willing to be a positive representative of Curious Comedy inside and outside of the theater for the community, funders, and partners. An open, honest, direct style communicator with the ability to identify and mediate issues and concerns for self and others. Demonstrate success in teamwork and collaboration. Self-starter with strong problem-solving and creative solution-building skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Office, QuickBooks, Gusto, Slack, and Google admin tools. Must have a good sense of humor, be able to identify and communicate boundaries, manage time, and prioritize effectively. Must have a car.
