Summary This position is part of the United States Park Police Field Operations Division. It ensures effective telecommunications to the Force, other law enforcement and public safety agencies, operational personnel, and the public. The incumbent answers 911 – emergency and non‑emergency calls for service and provides full law enforcement communications services operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Responsibilities Serve as a dispatcher for US Park Police, applying in‑depth knowledge of dispatch operating systems, databases, and equipment, and using dispatch policies and past practices to isolate and solve unusual and difficult technical problems. Perform dispatch and call‑taking services for a wide variety of complex public safety related incidents and operations. Coordinate rescue, ambulance, and helicopter operations of various agencies. Receive and evaluate emergency calls for service. Provide dispatch support to law enforcement activities. Query and relay want, warrant, drive and vehicle status, Be on the Lookout (BOL), and Attempt to Locate (ATL) information for law enforcement contact and investigations. Serve as a certified operator of National Criminal Information Network (NCIC), National Law Enforcement Communications System (NLETS), and state criminal information networks (ACCESS, TLETS, VCIN, etc.). Monitored a variety of alarm systems including intrusion, fire, robbery, panic, and maintenance related systems; analyze alarms, ensure appropriate response, and report on alarm system troubles. Assist law enforcement officers with investigations. Pay Information A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected. The display of a salary range on this vacancy shall not be construed as granting an entitlement to a higher rate of pay. GS‑6 range: $56,205 to $73,063 per year GS‑7 range: $62,456 to $81,198 per year GS‑8 range: $69,168 to $89,924 per year Promotion to the full performance level is neither guaranteed nor implied and will be based solely on your ability to satisfactorily perform the work of the position, existing work at the higher grade level, and recommendation by the position's supervisor. Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level. Conditions of Employment U.S. Citizenship required. Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication. Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males. Participate in Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program. Submit to a drug test and receive a negative result prior to appointment; subject to random testing. Required to wear a uniform and comply with National Park Service uniform standards; uniform allowance provided. May be required to work on‑call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, and shift work. Intermittent work schedule; no pre‑scheduled work. If new employee or supervisor, complete a one‑year probationary period. Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance. Designated “Essential”; required to report to work or remain at work during severe weather or other emergency conditions. Within 12 months of employment, obtain and maintain required dispatching and emergency management certifications (e.g., NCIC, NLETS, VCIN, EMD). Accept a 1‑year probationary period for new employees or supervisors. Qualifications All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement – 12/31/2025 unless otherwise stated. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, resume must clearly indicate nature of duties, dates of employment, and hours worked. Experience Requirements GS‑06: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable to GS‑05; includes customer service in a high‑pace environment, operation of multi‑line telephones, computers or radio equipment, and input of callers' information into computer systems. GS‑07: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable to GS‑06; includes customer service‑based experience in a high‑pace environment, operating multi‑line telephones, computers or radio equipment, inputting information into computer systems, operating public safety dispatch systems (NCIC, NLETS, CLETS, CAD) with limited supervision, and operating alarm monitoring, records management, or report writing systems. GS‑08: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable to GS‑07; includes performing public safety dispatching (law enforcement, emergency medical, search and rescue, and fire) using personal computers and software, operating NCIC, NLETS, CLETS, or CAD independently, and operating alarm monitoring, records management, and writing systems. Volunteer Experience Volunteer work through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (professional, philanthropic, religious, community, student) is considered and credited as long as it is paid or unpaid and satisfies the experience requirements. Include months, years, and hours per week. Probationary Period Conditions 1‑year probationary period during which fitness and whether continued employment advances the public interest are evaluated. Performance and conduct, agency needs, organizational goals, and efficiency of the Federal service are considered. Termination occurs automatically at the end of the period unless written certification of continued employment is provided. Physical Demands Incumbent must function efficiently in a confined space for extended periods, with no breaks and no opportunity to leave the confines of the Communications Center. The dispatcher is required to work most holidays, report for duty during adverse weather, and work long hours as needed in emergencies. Position is sedentary with high levels of stress, shift work, and occasional lifting up to 50 pounds. Working Conditions Work is normally performed in a well‑lit, temperature‑controlled room. Noise levels are routinely high due to electronic equipment, telephones, radios, and other discussions. The setting is typically confined, secure, and entrance/egress is controlled. Incumbent may not leave the center unless relieved by another qualified dispatcher. Telework is not suitable for this position.
