The Connecticut General Assembly Senate Democrats Office is seeking a Caucus Employee who will provide administrative assistance of a confidential, complex, and responsible nature to one or more State Senators; perform constituent relations tasks; and independently perform research and public relations services for assigned Senators requiring a high level of accountability, problem-solving, and interpersonal contacts. Must be able to analyze administrative problems and exercise judgment in handling a variety of situations.


Examples of Duties

Plans and organizes work according to legislative schedule, office, or standard procedures.

Establishes priorities within work assignment.

Confers and coordinates work assignments and schedules with assigned Senator.

Administers constituent relations activities for assigned Senator.

Identifies, establishes working relationships, and maintains contact with resource persons in standing committees, government agencies, districts, towns, or related organizations.

Performs research on matters of legislative or constituent interest.

Assists Representatives in planning public relations activities, including newsletters, news releases, appearances, and related opportunities, and coordinates mailing program.

Coordinates and prepares materials for meetings and conferences. 

Screens, directs, and follows up on incoming correspondence or calls. 

Compiles summary reports of legislative matters.

Composes and types confidential letters and reports.

Performs special assignments, studies, routine administrative, and other related functions as directed.

Tracks legislation for assigned legislators.

Maintains Constituent Management Service (CMS) records for assigned legislators.

Acts as support staff during absence of a team member.

 

Typical Qualifications

Requires a bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Ability to operate independently and exercise judgment.

Ability to work effectively with legislators, team members, staff, and others.

Requires attention to detail and good organizational skills.

Requires a general knowledge of legislative policies and procedures, other state and government agencies and public policy issues.

Requires demonstrated skill in written and oral communications.

Experience with Outlook and Word required. Experience with Excel helpful.

 

May be required to work overtime.

 

Supplemental Information

Works under the supervision of the Director of Legislative Operations in conjunction with the State Senator(s). Work is performed independently and checked for accuracy and conformance with proper procedures.
