Job Summary
This position is intended to provide an opportunity to gain hospital Pharmacy practice experience, commensurate with Pharmacy program progression. During the first half of Pharmacy school, the Intern should expect to perform duties similar to a Pharmacy Technician, then based upon demonstrated competence and Pharmacy workflow needs, transition to a supportive role for the Pharmacist and Technicians, to include clinical and distributive Pharmacy services, under the supervision of a Pharmacist. Provides support to the pharmacist in delivery of pharmaceutical care in compliance with all Federal/State laws and regulations. Works effectively and cooperatively within the workplace. Essential Functions
Under the direction of a licensed pharmacist, the Pharmacy Intern dispenses and compounds medications prescribed by physicians or other medical practitioners. The final check of medications and/or written orders will be checked by the pharmacist. Responsibilities may change, based upon progress in Pharmacy school, and demonstrated competencies, in coordination with the supervising Pharmacist. Maintain accurate records and documentation related to all medication activity, including, but not limited to purchasing, inventory, preparation, distribution, administration, charging, waste, and / or return. Accurately prepare and dispense medications and Sterile Products, including Hazardous Drugs, that are safe for patients of Skagit Regional Health. Clean pharmacy equipment, utensils and work areas. Perform routine inspections of medication areas, and ensure all medications are appropriate for patient use. Deliver and restock medications and related supplies to appropriate patient care area in a timely manner, and consistent with Skagit Regional Health policies. Maintain operational knowledge to accurately refill and manage Automated Dispensing Devices. Consistently and accurately document all medication transactions and ensure all medication dispensations are consistent with regulatory requirements and Skagit Regional Health policies. Ability to account for all medication distributions, and only distribute medications, under the supervision of Pharmacist on duty. Immediately report all potential, or suspected, medication diversion to Pharmacy Management. Must provide excellent customer service and maintain patient focused care and display professional and positive attitude during every interaction. Gather patients' medication history through direct interaction with patients, patients' families, retail pharmacies, and other healthcare providers. Ability to adhere to posted schedule, which may include overtime, weekends, holidays and extended shifts. Under the supervision of a Pharmacist, the Intern, based upon Pharmacy School progress and demonstrated abilities, may perform the following functions of a Pharmacist. Ensure appropriate dosing of medications in neonatal, pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients. Accompany Pharmacists to emergency CODES. Perform therapeutic substitution per organizational formulary, provide drug therapy monitoring per organizational policies and / or procedures, and perform documentation in the medical record. Reviews orders placed by authorized prescribers, to assure accuracy, and may input patient and medication data to maintain pharmacy files, charge and inventory data in an accurate and timely manner in compliance with SVH policies and procedures. Identifies medication errors and adverse drug reactions. Performs chart reviews as required for assessment of therapies, interactions, and patient response to medications and for regulatory required monitoring of therapy parameters. Provides information to hospital staff and Providers regarding drug interactions, side effects, dosage and storage of pharmaceuticals. Interacts with patients and families in a compassionate manner, respecting their right to privacy and confidentiality. Assists co-workers, patients, vendors, physicians and others in a respectful and courteous manner, and ensures that service deficits are resolved in a courteous and professional manner. Complete all learning requirements when assigned and within the assigned date. Maintain current licensure and/or certification as required. Proactively develop and maintain skills relevant to providing high quality patient care and regulatory compliance. Promptly report regulatory deficiencies, with supporting evidence, to Pharmacy Management. Other relevant duties as assigned by management or supervising Pharmacists, may include hazardous medication transport other SRH departments/locations. Operates a motorized vehicle in a professional and respectful manner, being careful to obey all traffic laws, consistent with the laws of Washington State. Maintain knowledge of, and comply with, all Skagit Regional Health policies and procedures. Performs other duties as assigned.

Education
Active enrollment in a School of Pharmacy.

Experience/Training
None required.

License/Certifications
Current Washington State Pharmacy Intern License required. Current Washington State Driver's License and automobile liability insurance required if transporting medication.

Other Skills
Effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills required. Must be able to effectively utilize Microsoft Office applications to perform work. Well-developed problem solving and analytical skills required. Must be able to effectively prioritize workload amongst frequent interruptions with competing priorities. Knowledge of the healthcare environment required. Operational knowledge of Automated Dispensing Cabinet (ADC) preferred. Ability to coordinate work schedule with requirements of position (may include overtime and weekend work).

Physical Demands and Work Environment
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This position is very active and requires standing, walking up/down stairways, bending, kneeling, stooping and crouching. The employee must routinely lift or move objects up to 30 pounds. Repetitive tasks such as pharmacy compounding, typing, sitting, answering phones, and interacting with computers and computer systems throughout the day is a function of the position.
