Job Summary:

The Director of Purchasing for Freight, Packaging, and Distribution is responsible for developing and executing sourcing strategies related to the procurement of freight, packaging materials, and distribution services. This role ensures cost-effective sourcing, efficient logistics, and supply chain performance, focusing on optimizing warehousing and distribution operations. The Director will work closely with internal stakeholders to manage vendor relationships, negotiate contracts, and drive cost savings while ensuring service quality and operational efficiency.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Sourcing:
  • Develop and execute procurement strategies for freight, packaging, and distribution services, ensuring alignment with the company’s supply chain and operational goals.
  • Identify cost-saving opportunities in warehousing, transportation, and packaging materials through strategic supplier partnerships.
  • Negotiate long-term agreements with freight carriers, packaging suppliers, and distribution vendors to optimize costs and service levels.
  • Vendor and Logistics Management:
  • Build and maintain relationships with suppliers, freight carriers, and distribution providers to ensure high performance and reliability.
  • Conduct regular performance reviews and maintain KPIs to monitor vendor compliance with cost, quality, and delivery requirements.
  • Collaborate with warehousing and distribution teams to optimize logistics processes and ensure timely delivery of goods to customers.
  • Cost Optimization:
  • Lead initiatives to reduce procurement costs across freight, packaging, and distribution while improving operational efficiency.
  • Drive competitive bidding processes, negotiate favorable rates, and explore alternative suppliers to meet changing business needs.
  • Warehousing & Distribution Efficiency:
  • Collaborate with warehousing teams to improve space utilization, inventory control, and overall distribution performance.
  • Ensure smooth integration between procurement and warehousing functions, optimizing materials flow and logistics within the supply chain.
  • Risk Management:
  • Identify risks related to freight, packaging, and distribution, including supply chain disruptions, fluctuating costs, and regulatory compliance.
  • Develop contingency plans and manage supplier diversification to mitigate risks.
  • Leadership & Team Development:
  • Lead, mentor, and develop the purchasing team, fostering a high-performance culture focused on continuous improvement.
  • Promote collaboration between the purchasing, warehousing, and logistics teams to ensure end-to-end supply chain efficiency.
  • Budgeting and Reporting:
  • Manage and oversee the purchasing budget for freight, packaging, and distribution services, ensuring expenditures align with business objectives.
  • Provide senior leadership with regular reporting on procurement metrics, cost savings, and vendor performance.

Qualifications:

  • Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, Logistics, or a related field (MBA or advanced degree preferred).
  • Experience:
  • 10+ years of experience in procurement with a focus on freight, packaging, and distribution, including 5+ years in a leadership role.
  • Proven experience in managing warehousing operations and understanding of supply chain logistics.
  • Strong track record of driving cost savings and process improvements in logistics and packaging procurement.
  • Skills and Competencies:
  • Strong negotiation skills and expertise in contract management, particularly in freight and logistics.
  • Deep understanding of warehousing, transportation, and packaging best practices.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, including warehousing and logistics teams.
  • Proficient in procurement and logistics management systems and ERP platforms.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to make data-driven decisions.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Industry certifications such as CPSM (Certified Professional in Supply Management), CSCP (Certified Supply Chain Professional), or related certifications.
  • Experience with digital procurement platforms and logistics technologies.
