Radiologic Technologist

Position Summary

Responsible for producing high quality X-ray images by conducting exams in a safe and efficient manner. Has the ability to verify and follow referring providers' orders while remaining in compliance with the Imaging Sciences departmental policies. Possesses a sound understanding of human anatomy as well as x-ray positioning and the use if immobilization devices when warranted.

Minimum Qualifications

Completion of formal training in an approved School of Radiologic Technology. Maintains current NYS licensure and ARRT certification with CE credits as required.

Systems and Equipment used:

Systems: Medical record (eRecord), PACS, Radiology Information System (RIS), patient transport, communication systems, web paging, telephone/fax, printers.

Equipment: Wheelchairs, Stretchers, Patient beds, Portables, C-arms, Xray/Fluoro rooms, patient transfer assist devices (slider boards, lifts, hover mats), Point of Care Testing (POCT), Image processing equipment (CR processors).

Typical Assignments and Responsibilities

20% Prepares room and patient per order, properly sets up equipment, position patients, and determine proper exposure factors in order to produce a high quality image. Observes each patient's status and interprets the appropriate information needed to meet his or her age-specific needs. Alerts imaging RN if any patient status changes are noted.

15% Maintains appropriate supplies in the x-ray rooms. Uses an established work pattern to image patients in a logical and efficient manner.

15% Produces a diagnostic, high quality image for interpretation by the Radiologist.

10% Utilizes electronic patient information systems to verify patient name, date, appropriate exam, and any special exam specific comments from the provider. Understands and practices the Dual patient identifier procedure.

10% Handles all radiologic equipment safely and properly keeping dose to patient as low as possible.

10% Safely transfers patients to and from imaging tables using assistive devices such as ARJO lift, transfer boards, hover mats. Knows how and when to call a code, location of crash carts and emergency supplies. Understands the RT role in an emergency situation. Notifies immediate supervisor and/or Clinical engineering of equipment malfunctions.

10% Maintains accurate patient record keeping by properly identifying images and assuring images are sent to the PACS system correctly.

10% Completes and bills for studies accurately and in a timely fashion.

Independently completes all required hospital mandatories including Health update, Fluoroscopy refresher, online courses and Mandatory in-service test.

Adheres to ALARA principles and radiation safe practices at all times.

Is aware of on-call schedule and obligations to provide coverage when necessary.

Must be aware of the presence of electrical and radiant energy hazards and intermittent exposure to unpleasant physical conditions. Must be able to stand most of the day regularly handling light to heavy weights.

Works independently and as a team. Knows when to ask a senior technologist for assistance.

Must have well developed verbal and written communication skills being able to interpret and provide clear instructions to the patient so that they understand the procedure.

Must create a positive interface between Imaging Sciences and all of its internal and external customers.

Practices appropriate infection control techniques before and after each patient exam.

Career Ladder : The three bands within this position are differentiated by level of independence, supervision required, ability to precept new employees in the use of all equipment, and the ability to lead and meet established departmental goals.

Band One: _ Entry Level Radiologic Technologist _ - Technologists new to URMC Imaging Department who require training as well as regular direct supervision or guidance from a more senior technologist. This generally involves orientation to the Departments infrastructure, policies, protocols, workflows, procedures and routines. During this period the Technologists must demonstrate an ability to progress towards proficient and competent performance of required tasks of a Radiologic Technologist. Success within this band requires independent responsibility for performing general section studies in a safe and efficient manner, completing all associated paper and computer work while providing high quality images for radiologist interpretation.

Band Two: _ Competent Radiologic Technologist _ - With minimal supervision, demonstrates proficiency and competence in all aspects of job responsibilities and expectations, and consistently demonstrates initiative to assist in other areas of the department when the need arises. Able to work with student technologists to sign off on their required competencies while rotating through UR Imaging. Requires minimal supervision. Demonstrates consistent attention to detail when performing all imaging exams. Completes all associated paper and computer work for discharging patients with appropriate post procedure instructions.

Additional duties may include working on special projects, such as new equipment evaluations and assisting in the design of areas where clinical equipment will be installed, or assignment to departmental committees.

Band Two status requires a minimum of 18 months of progressively responsible professional work experience in an Imaging Sciences setting, with at least 6 months dedicated to the URMC Imaging Sciences Department.

Band Three: _ Advanced Radiologic Technologist _ - In addition to the responsibilities of a Radiologic Technologist Band Two, serves as a preceptor in the on-boarding of newly hired Technologists directly orienting to equipment, imaging routines and procedures, computer programs and software, as well as departmental and hospital policies. A Band Three technologist is considered a subject matter expert in downtime procedures and acts as super-user when new equipment or programs are introduced to the department. Directly assists in the mentoring of newer Technologists by providing one-on-one assistance in conjunction with the Supervising Technologist. Possesses subject matter expertise in several different areas that could include, but not limited to myelograms, specialty OR cases, specialty GIGU cases, the ability to competently operate a variety of different vendor platforms and perform departmental QA procedures. Able to effectively troubleshoot issues that arise within the department and deal with accordingly. A Band Three technologist is considered a subject matter expert in downtime procedures and act as super-user when new equipment or programs are introduced to the department. Able to represent the department on various committees such as safety, quality, and operations groups. Takes responsibility to prepare the department and staff for NYS and TJC evaluations. Facilitates new policies and procedures to staff. Serves as a resource to the supervisors for special projects as assigned.

Select Band Three Technologists may designated as Leads to support operations on various shifts. Leads may either assist their shift supervisor, or in the absence of a supervisor, determine workflow and staff schedule/assignments. Leads may also provide performance evaluation input to the section supervisor.
