Research Support Specialist III for the National Institute of Mental Health under the direction of the Section on Cellular and Cognitive Neurodevelopment (SCCN). The Research Specialist III must demonstrate a working knowledge of animal science and technology (e.g., first aid response, pharmacy and pharmacology, surgical support, treatment, nursing care, and examination), as well as have experience with behavioral training of animals and the care of animals in biomedical research. The candidate should have a high level of technical expertise in anesthesia and surgical support, anesthesia monitoring, constant rate infusion and/or total intravenous anesthesia, surgical (sterile prep and surgical scrub) preparation and surgical assistance. The ideal candidate will have experience in behavioral studies and handling of nonhuman primates, especially new world species, and technical experience in using computers and computer software to conduct research studies. Other duties as assigned. Requirements Candidate must have a B.S. (or equivalent) or higher degree and a minimum of 5 years’ experience in laboratory animal research environment including experience planning and designing experiments. Candidates should have knowledge of operational principles behind techniques and procedures used including experience operating, calibrating and maintaining technical instruments. Accurate data/sample collection, accurate and timely record keeping, and data processing. Critical thinking skills. Knowledge of math and statistics through education or demonstrated experience. Good English, oral and written, communication skills are required. Must be able to lift 40lbs to 60lbs, climb, stoop, bend, reach, and stand for prolonged periods. Must be responsible and reliable to work independently when necessary and maintain harmonious client and team relationships. Must be available to work early mornings, evenings and weekends when necessary. Duties The responsibilities of the ICD technician shall include but are not limited to the following: Provides surgical support and trains others to perform surgical support to include instrument preparation and sterilization, animal preparation, sterile and non-sterile scrub assistance for the support of aseptic surgeries, Provides anesthesia support and trains others to perform anesthesia support to include induction, maintenance, and recovery of animals for surgery, MRI scans, PET scans, CT scans or similar procedures, Demonstrated experience in animal vital signs monitoring including ECG, pulse oximetry, blood pressure, End Tidal/expired CO₂ monitoring, temperature monitoring, or other parameters as needed to ensure the stability and well-being of animals under anesthesia, Responsible for technical, clinical, and surgical support to research animals, Performs routine animal health assessment or scoring as described in research protocol Performs routine veterinary nursing care, treatments, intravenous catheter placement, and support as prescribed by a Veterinarian or as described in the research protocol, Colony management including tracking animal breeding status, enrollment and progression through research studies, progress made toward research goals, supplemental care and support of research animals including neonatal care and feeding, Provides research support to include sample collection, preparation or processing, and analysis, Establishes ordering levels, maintains logbooks and inventory of supplies, Organizes the performance of routine preventive maintenance for all research equipment, Demonstrated interest in conducting literature review, interpreting and summarizing findings for publication or presentation, Perform and train lab members in positive reinforcement training and behavioral management, Responsible for wearing proper Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) and showering, when necessary, Any duties or task as delegated from contract or government management. Maintains accurate and legible records in paper and/or digital format, Assist with maintaining a clean and hygienic laboratory environment including but not limited to cleaning, organizing, and sanitizing equipment used in the lab or equipment which comes in contact with animals, animal blood, bodily fluids, etc., Other duties as assigned. Hours: Basic workweek of forty (40) hours per week with the start and the end of the workday dependent on the contract requirements of the workplace. Hours dictated by the institutional research schedule, weekend and holiday work may be required. Must be reliable in attendance to ensure animals receive appropriate level of care. Potential for call‑in to assist facility or animal health related emergencies. Potential to provide weekend coverage as required to meet the needs of the scientific study being supported. However, technical and management duties may be performed in an animal care vivarium, barrier facility, surgical or test procedure laboratory, animal housing/bedding cleaning and processing areas. Work may require use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) in these facilities. Chemical, biological, or radiological hazards may be present and compliance with the institute safety training, equipment and animal exposure program requirements is required.
