Job Summary

The Principal Engineer in the CPE SW Platform Engineering group provides technical leadership across Video products and technologies. The individual in this role will be responsible for building and enhancing the RDK Video stack for Smart TVs, Streaming devices, and Settop Boxes. This role also evaluates new products/features and drives new feature and product initiatives into the Quality Assurance organizations. The role requires strong leadership and solid communication skills. The position requires the ability to work with Product Managers to define product requirements, provide direction to the Product Development engineering team, and drive the product through development and testing. The ideal candidate would have 10+ years of hands-on development experience leading and developing components that contribute to media playback, preferably on embedded devices. The role requires strong programming knowledge in C / C++ , working experience with the Linux operating system, knowledge of Git or other version-control software, and knowledge of various debugging tools like gdb, valgrind, etc. Working experience with Audio/Video standards, graphics, and working experience with Yocto build system is much desirable . A proven track record in delivery execution under aggressive schedule demands and competing priorities is a must. Experience working with open-source community and agile development is highly desirable.

Job Description

Core Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with project stakeholders to identify product and technical requirements. Conducts analysis to determine integration needs.
  • Designs new software and web applications, supports applications under development and customizes current applications. Develops software update processes for existing applications. Assists in the roll-out of software releases.
  • Trains junior Software Development Engineers on internally developed software applications.
  • Oversees the researching, writing and editing of documentation and technical requirements, including software designs, evaluation plans, test results, technical manuals and formal recommendations and reports.
  • Keeps current with technological developments within the industry. Monitors and evaluates competitive applications and products. Reviews literature, patents and current practices relevant to the solution of assigned projects.
  • Assists with technical leadership throughout the design process and assists in guidance with regards to practices, procedures and techniques. Serves as a guide mentor for Software Development Engineers.
  • Assists in tracking and evaluating performance metrics. Ensures team delivers software on time, to specification and within budget.
  • Works with Quality Assurance team to determine if applications fit specification and technical requirements. Tests and evaluates systems, subsystems and components.
  • Acts as a technical contact and liaison for outside vendors and/or customers.
  • Presents and defends architectural, design and technical choices to internal and external audiences.
  • Consistent exercise of independent judgment and discretion in matters of significance.
  • Regular, consistent and punctual attendance. Must be able to work nights and weekends, variable schedule(s) and overtime as necessary.
  • Create schedule of software delivery from conception to production, working with engineers to correctly estimate their contributing work
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Technical Requirements:

Embedded Linux

  • Familiarity with embedded linux development (RDK a plus)
  • Familiarity with Yocto/bitbake build system
  • Familiarity with Secure Media Playback

Video Pipeline

  • Experience with low latency players used in cloud gaming or screen mirroring systems
  • Experience with media playback graphing systems (GStreamer, Pipewire, Microsoft Media Foundation)
  • Experience with IP video delivery and playback (Dash, HLS)
  • Experience with GStreamer Media playback (including custom element development)
  • Experience with video codecs (H264/H265/VP9/...)
  • Experience with audio codecs (AAC/AC3/..)

Graphics

  • Familiarity with OpenGL ES and/or Vulkan a plus
