This position performs repair and preventative maintenance duties on a wide variety of emergency response vehicles including ambulances, fire apparatus, and other related equipment by inspecting emergency and fire vehicles and equipment, diagnosing mechanical problems, and maintaining maintenance records.

This position is a "mandatory-testing" position that requires Drug Testing.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Performs repairs and routine servicing and preventative maintenance tasks, both in shop and on site, necessary to keep emergency and fire vehicles, fire apparatus, equipment, and tools in operable condition by performing tasks such as pumping fuel into vehicles, checking fluid levels, replacing fluids, draining and replacing oil, changing filters, lubricating mechanical parts, replacing parts including tires, belts, and hoses, checking batteries, flushing radiators, performing tune ups, and coordinating repair and service activities with appropriate department personnel and/or outside service providers

Diagnoses and repairs issues with various systems and components of emergency and fire vehicles, apparatus, and equipment, such as electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic malfunctions, and air conditioning systems by performing visual and manual inspections, testing, and troubleshooting

Identifies maintenance and repair priorities by taking into consideration safety and equipment downtime in order to minimize repair and maintenance costs, length of downtime, and ensure equipment is ready for service

Ensures compliance of repair and maintenance work with all applicable laws, standards, policies, and procedures by monitoring work environment, initiating actions to correct deviations or violations, and adhering to established procedures and use of safety equipment to ensure safety of employees, vehicle drivers, and other individuals

Assists in maintaining logs or records of inspections, preventative maintenance work, and repairs to ensure compliance with record keeping requirements of regulatory agencies

Researches repair requirements, preventive maintenance standards, and parts requirements for a variety of emergency and fire vehicles, fire apparatus, and equipment to maintain an awareness of new parts, procedures, trends, and advances in the profession

Performs other duties as required, including being on call 24/7 at times, to respond to fleet emergencies

TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualification Requirements:

Training and Experience:

High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) and one year of specialized or technical training beyond high school in fleet repair and maintenance and three years of experience in fleet maintenance; or a combination of education and experience equivalent to these requirements.

Licenses and Certifications:

Class "A" commercial driver's license

Must currently possess Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) Certification from the EVT Certification Commission, Inc. as outlined below:

For Fire:

F1 - Maintenance, Inspection, and Testing of Fire Apparatus F2 - Design and Performance Standards of Fire Apparatus

OR

For Ambulance

E-O - Maintenance, Inspection, and Testing of Ambulances E-1 - Design and Performance of Ambulances

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics:

Materials, tools, and standard practices of the automotive mechanic trade, with emphasis on heavy

Duty equipment and maintenance

Occupational hazards and safety precautions

Emergency and fire vehicle, apparatus, and equipment repair and maintenance principles and practices, including the use of air powered equipment, lifts and hoists, fire apparatus electrical systems, cooling and air conditioning systems, and gas and diesel engines

Maintenance, inspection, and testing of emergency vehicle or fire apparatus design and performance standards of emergency vehicle or fire apparatus

Diagnosing, troubleshooting, and repairing mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic malfunctions

Communication and interpersonal relations as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction

Identify and solve routine problems as they arise

Maintain effective preventative maintenance programs, polices, and procedures

Read and follow simple to complicated instructions, schematics, and other information contained in repair manuals for the diagnosis and repair of emergency and fire vehicles, fire apparatus, and equipment

Operate a motor vehicle, fire apparatus, ambulance, and related equipment in order to conduct road tests of vehicles undergoing repair

Read and interpret diagrams, technical specifications, and operations manuals prepare reports, including work orders, activity reports, and maintenance logs

Emergency Management Responsibilities:

During emergency conditions, the incumbent of this position will automatically be considered an emergency service worker. This employee is subject to being called to work in the event of a disaster, such as a hurricane, or other emergency situation and is expected to perform emergency service duties, as assigned.

Physical Requirements:

Positions in this class typically require climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, talking, hearing, seeing, finger and hand dexterity as well as repetitive motions.

Strenuous Physical Work: Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions, intense noises and travel.
