Overview

Position Purpose:

The Therapeutic Support Specialist is responsible for identifying, developing and overseeing the implementation of behavioral interventions designed to promote the overall well-being and quality of life for students at GLS.

The Therapeutic Support Specialist also serves as dynamic and flexible resource to the internal GLS team through development of comprehensive behavioral health strategies, behavioral health training, and hands-on demonstration/modeling of behavioral health practices.

Essential Functions:
  • Creates behavior support, intervention, and crisis plans for students challenged with moderate to high behavioral conditions. Collaborates with Department resources, as needed, to ensure the behavior strategies enhance and/or complement therapy plans, as applicable.
  • Provides effective hands-on therapeutic/behavioral training to increase staffs' knowledge, skills, and confidence in applying effective de-escalation and behavior management tactics tailored to specific student needs. Offers constructive feedback to strengthen staff comfort and confidence when presented with student behavior challenges.
  • Conducts assessments into student/staff behavioral incidents to better understand student triggers, staff actions and other contributing factors. Leads or participates in debriefings following incidents.
  • Reviews physical interventions and other critical incidents for their assigned caseload daily and oversees the therapeutic de-briefing process for both students and staff utilizing other Department resources, as needed and appropriate.
  • Collaborates with multidisciplinary teams in the development and implementation of trauma informed practices, positive behavior supports, and behavior intervention plans.
  • Participates in standard team/program meetings. Attends all Collaborative Team Meetings for assigned students and is an active member of the Individual Treatment Plan Team. Provides proposed solutions and direction on behavioral support approaches, intervention and overall support to core teams.
  • Attends psychiatric appointments/reviews, as necessary and appropriate, for students on their assigned caseload.
  • Conducts therapeutic/behavioral assessments necessary to inform practices and develop comprehensive therapeutic support plans, utilizing other Departmental resources, as needed and appropriate.
  • Reviews individual student progress through periodic record and/or site visits. Adjusts behavior support plans as needed.
  • Gathers student behavioral data through multi-modal avenues, as appropriate. Analyzes behavior data for patterns, trends.
  • Maintains service notes.
  • Protects participant rights. Reports any suspected abuse, whether physical, sexual, or mental/psychological per agency protocol.
  • Establishes standards for documentation related to behavior support and intervention plans and trains staff on these requirements.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and complies with all information in the Company Handbook; Company policies/procedures including maintaining participant confidentiality; emergency/disaster procedures, fire/tornado safety, and vehicle operations manual.
  • Must act in the company's best interests for quality service delivery by promoting the consistent practice of company, division, and program standards.
  • Provides input regarding companywide needs, growth opportunities, and innovative ideas to improve service.
  • Presents self in a professional manner in action and appearance. Fosters positive/supportive relationships between all disciplines and departments. Functions as a team member and perpetuates this attitude among all personnel.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Bachelor's Degree in a Behavioral Science (Social Work, Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Educational Psychology, or Related Human Services field) or Education preferred.
  • Associate's Degree or High School Diploma plus at least 5 years of relevant professional experience providing therapeutic/behavioral support to individuals with disabilities will also be considered.
  • Requires 2 years of experience working with adults or children with intellectual/developmental disabilities specifically those who present mild to significant behavioral support needs in a CBRF group home, RCC, day program, school, camp or related setting.
  • Autism experience, and experience developing data collection and behavior plans for staff and families preferred.
  • Requires demonstrated knowledge of Individual Treatment Plan, Individual Service Plan, Behavior Support Plan, environmental modifications, Motivational Programs and Person-Centered Planning, program development for building internal motivation for student success vs. long term external reinforcement.
  • Formal previous training in applied behavior principles and application is preferred.
  • Previous experience developing and delivering staff education programs a strong plus.
  • Demonstrates an ability to exercise good judgment and effectively solve problems.
  • Remains calm under pressure and maintains self-composure/control in times of high stress or when others are excited.
  • Effective working alone and as a member of a team in managing change.

Additional Information

Salary: From $52,500 annually + credit for additional years of experience
